Endesa launches a new electric mobility plan to reach 8% of its employees this year

  • 7 of every 100 electric cars sold in Spain since the electric mobility plan was launched in 2015 are driven by Endesa employees.
  • The 534 workers that already participate in the plan have driven over 6.5 million kilometres and have saved the atmosphere around 1,000 tonnes of CO2, which is equivalent to the emissions of 290 homes in one year.
  • The objective is for 10% of the staff to drive an electric car in 2020, multiplied by 5 percent of electric vehicles in the fleet, consolidating the presence of hybrid vehicles, with a percentage greater than 20%, and in five years, eliminating 25% of fuel vehicles.
  • The plan is part of Endesa’s strategy to decarbonise the economy by electrifying demand.

Endesa has just launched the fourth edition of the Electric Mobility Plan for EmployeesThe objective is for another 200 employees this year to join the 534 workers that are already driving with zero emissions in their personal transportation, thus reaching more than 8% of the staff committing to electric mobility.

Since Endesa launched its first mobility plan in 2015, 7 of every 100 electric cars sold in Spain are purchased by workers from the company. During this time, these vehicles have driven over 6.5 million kilometres, and have avoided atmospheric emissions of nearly 1,000 tonnes of CO2, as well as the emission of particles and NOx, contributing to improve air quality in city centres.

The new edition of the mobility plan again includes agreements with different electric car manufacturers, though the employee can choose between 5 models that are offered. All models are 100% electric and have the approved ranges, reaching more than 300 kilometres in some cases.

To incentivise the use of the electric vehicle, and given the uncertainty about the launch date of incentivation plans by the administrations, the company has negotiated competitive offers with electric car manufacturers to avoid having to wait for them. In addition, and as proof of their commitment to sustainable mobility, participants can again opt for an economic incentive provided by the company for their collaboration in disseminating the plan, which gives parking priorities at the corporate headquarters to electric vehicles. Employees are supported by the Project’s Technical Office that was set up at the start of the campaign to handle all enquiries and help them through the process.

The company has also offered its workers and the general public grants to purchase charging points through the End-to-end Electric Vehicle Solution for the installation, maintenance, warranty and financing of this equipment.

Since its launch, the Electric Mobility Plan for employees has been accompanied by a programme to install charging points at the company’s main work centres for staff to charge their vehicles if they run out of juice. Reserved parking spaces are available at the Madrid head office and in the Seville offices, both of which are equipped with semi-fast chargers and a fast charging point for any model of vehicle, so that employees can charge batteries to 80% in less than 30 minutes (this is also the case at the Barcelona offices).

Sustainable, safe and electrified mobility

The plan is part of Endesa’s strategy to decarbonise the economy by electrifying demand and replacing fossil fuels for renewable energy sources. Electricity plays a crucial role in this process, since its final use is emission free, while 63.7% of electricity in Spain is already generated with zero emissions.

Transport is a key sector in the decarbonisation of the economy. In 2016, it was responsible for 27% of GHG emissions in Spain – the greatest contributor to emissions ahead of electricity generation, which produced 18% of the total. Transport is also behind the worsening air quality in cities.

Endesa, and the entire Enel group, maintain the firm commitment to promote electric mobility as a key tool in the fight against climate change. Therefore, its 2018-2020 Strategic Plan, presented at the end of last November, included an initiative to promote electric mobility through recharging solutions and developing the recharging network: the objective is to install 600 recharging points open to the public throughout the country in the next three years.

In addition, Endesa has also rolled out other in-house initiatives to electrify transport:

  1. Corporate fleet:

The measures set out in the Sustainable Mobility Plan include Endesa’s goal of optimising and electrifying its fleet of vehicles by 2021. Targets include increasing the number of electric vehicles in its fleet fivefold from the current 4% to 15%, raising the share of hybrid vehicles to over 20%, and eliminating 25% of combustion-engine vehicles in five years. All these steps should drive down emissions by 20%.

Since 2010, Endesa has quadrupled the number of all-electric vehicles, and will add more during 2017 to take the total to 100 electric vehicles by the end of the year.

Since 2008, Endesa has also boasted the largest commercial fleet of hybrids in Spain, comprising 469 vehicles that have helped to prevent the emission into the atmosphere of over 1,540 tonnes of CO2. Each of these vehicles emits a tonne less CO2 per annum than a diesel vehicle.

There is also a plan in place to electrify the management team’s company cars (13% of the entire fleet – some 340 cars). The objective is that within four years, 4 of every 10 vehicles of this segment are hybrids or 100% electric.  Today, close to a quarter of the team already have a plug-in hybrid

  2.  Corporate car sharing:

Other initiatives launched by Endesa in this sphere include the new car sharing service, offering employees a pool of electric vehicles to carry out their duties in a sustainable, emission-free way. Employees can access an on-line tool to book vehicles for hourly slots or even entire days.

This service is currently available at seven work centres and has 21 BMW i3s with a range of around 130 km, in the case of the first models, and 300 km for the new vehicles purchased in 2017. For this year, the number of vehicles is expected to increase and the service is expected to spread to other branches.

Uptake since the service was launched two years ago has been extremely positive, with 1,300 users registered to date, more than 5,000 bookings made, and upwards of 200,000 km covered, resulting in the avoidance of more than 24 tonnes of CO2. Objectives include hitting 1,000,000 km by 2021.

Awards and recognition

Implementing this plan and its success among the Endesa employees has been recognised in several fields, such as being selected as the 2016 Climate Project awarded by the Spanish Office of Climate Change as recognition of its contribution to reducing CO2 emissions for two consecutive years.  Its inclusion underlines the company’s commitment to reducing CO2 emissions.

In addition, in 2017, this Plan has received the award for the best business practice in the 13th CSR Benchmarking Seminar organised by the Sustainability Excellence Club. It has also been awarded the 2017 Best Business Initiative of sustainable mobility by the Spanish Association of Car Fleet Managers (AEGFA).  It has also been selected as one of the 60 finalists from among 475 companies participating in the Sustainable Living in Cities campaign to raise awareness of the best CSR practices associated with urban sustainability from an environmental and social perspective, and the Award for the best business practise at the 13th CSR Benchmarking Seminar organised by the Sustainability Excellence Club.
