- 6% of the company's workforce already drive privately-owned zero-emissions vehicles.
- Thanks to the three editions of the plan, 7.2% of the total sales of electric passenger cars in Spain to date relate to Endesa employees.
- Endesa’s goal is to optimise and electrify its vehicle fleet by 2021. The biggest challenges involve multiplying the percentage of electric vehicles within its fleet by 5, increasing the figure from the current 4% to 15%, consolidating the presence of hybrid vehicles, with a percentage higher than 20% and eliminating 25% of combustion vehicles in five years.
- The plan is part of Endesa’s strategy for decarbonising the economy, through the electrification of demand.
The third edition of Electric Mobility Plan for employees has just ended with another 266 workers who drive a privately-owned electric car 100% of the time. In total, thanks to the three editions of the plan, 534 of the company's employees, that is, almost 6% of the workforce, already drive with zero emissions.
Undoubtedly, this would be a good drive for the market: seven out of every 100 electric cars sold in our country during the time the plan has been in force (launched in 2015) are purchased by the company's workers. During this time, these cars have already travelled over 7 million kilometres, avoiding the atmospheric emission of over 955 tonnes of CO2 each year, as well as the emission of particles and NOx, thus contributing towards improving the air quality in city centres.
The new edition of the mobility plan now includes agreements with various electric car manufacturers, although employees have been able to choose between the 8 models offered to them. However, all models are 100% electric, with approved ranges that already reach over 300 kilometres in some cases.
The plan has enabled a choice between purchase and rental options, with everything included (vehicle, maintenance and insurance). In this third edition, two options are offered: 24-month, all-inclusive rental contracts or revolving credit, which means avoiding additional costs and, above all, the possibility of returning the vehicle at the end of the contract to overcome the technological obsolescence barrier.
In order to encourage the use of electric vehicles, the company prioritises electric vehicles in its corporate office car parks and, in addition, participants can also opt for a financial incentive granted by the company for collaborating in the dissemination of the plan. Employees have the support of the project office created since the first edition to answer all information requests and to accompany employees during the process.
The company has also offered its employees and the general public facilities to purchase a domestic recharging point through Comprehensive Electric Vehicle Solution, which permits the installation, maintenance, warranty and financing thereof.
The mobility plan for employees has been partnered, since its launch, with the installation of recharging infrastructure at the company's main offices for possible emergencies that may arise amongst employees: at both the Madrid and Seville offices, there is an exclusive car park for electric vehicles with access to semi-rapid chargers, as well as a rapid charging point, valid for any model of vehicle with which employees can charge 80% of their battery in less than 20 minutes (this is also present at the Barcelona office).
Sustainable, safe, electrified mobility
The plan is part of Endesa’s strategy for decarbonising the economy, through the electrification of demand and by replacing the use of fossil fuels with other renewable sources. Electricity plays an essential role in this process, since its end use has zero emissions and, at its origin, it is currently already 63.7% emission free in Spain. Transportation is a key sector in the process of decarbonising the economy and, in 2016, accounted for 27% of GHG emissions in Spain, it being the activity with the highest volume of emissions, above electricity generation, which accounted for 18% of emissions. Transportation is is also responsible for the deterioration of air quality in cities.
For this reason, Endesa has also implemented internal initiatives aimed at electrifying transportation.
- Corporate fleet:
Amongst the measures incorporated within the Sustainable Mobility Plan, Endesa aims to optimise and electrify its fleet of vehicles by 2021. The biggest challenges involve multiplying the percentage of electric vehicles within its fleet by 5, increasing the figure from the current 4% to 15%, consolidating the presence of hybrid vehicles, with a percentage higher than 20%, and eliminating 25% of combustion vehicles in five years. All this would represent a 20% reduction in emissions.
Since 2010, Endesa has multiplied the number pure electric vehicles by 4 and, throughout 2017, more units will be added to reach 100 vehicles at the end of the year.
Since 2008, Endesa has also had the largest commercial fleet of hybrid vehicles in Spain, consisting of 469 units that have managed to avoid the emission of over 1,540 tonnes of CO2. Each vehicle with these features emits one tonne of CO2 less per year than a diesel engine car.
Added to this is a new plan to electrify the fleet of vehicles used by the management team (9% of the total fleet, amounting to 229 cars), which aims to achieve 4 of each 10 electric vehicles in 4 years. To date, almost one quarter already have a plug-in hybrid car.
- Corporate car sharing:
Another initiative that Endesa has launched in this area is the new car-sharing service, involving a pool of electric vehicles made available to employees, so that they can carry out their work in a sustainable, non-polluting manner. Employees have an online tool to reserve the vehicle for hours or even full days.
This service is currently provided at seven office locations and comprises 21 BMW i3 vehicles, with an approximate range of 130 km for the first models in service and 300 km for new vehicles purchased in 2017, with an increased in the number of vehicles and extension of the service to other office locations expected in 2018. The balance during the first two years of implementation of the service has been very positive, with 1,300 users registered to date, more than 5,000 services carried out and over 200,000 km travelled, equivalent to a saving of over 24 tonnes of CO2. Among the proposed objectives is to reach 1,000,000 km travelled by 2021.
Awards and recognition
The implementation of this plan and its success amongst Endesa employees has been acknowledged in various areas, such as having been selected Climate Project 2016 by the Spanish Office of Climate Change in recognition of its contribution to reducing CO2 emissions. This new edition of the plan aims to renew this recognition, currently positioned in the final stage in the selection of Climate Projects 2017. Its inclusion would extend the recognition of its contribution to reducing CO2 emissions by another year.
Likewise, during 2017, this Plan received the award for the best business practice in the RSC XIII Benchmarking Conference, organised by the Club of Excellence in Sustainability. It also received the award for best 2017 sustainable mobility business initiative by the Asociación Española de Gestores de Flotas de Automóviles (AEGFA - Spanish Association of Fleet Managers). It has also been selected as one of 60 finalist projects out of 475 participating companies in the Sustainable Living in Cities initiative, with the aim of raising awareness of the best practices in CSR related to urban sustainability, from an environmental and social perspective.
