- Endesa's CSV Plan includes social, innovation and environmental actions in collaboration with more than a dozen entities in Ceuta.
The Minister of the Presidency and Institutional Relations, María Isabel Deu, today visited Endesa's headquarters in the Autonomous City of Ceuta to learn first-hand about the installation itself and the Creation of Shared Value (CSV) measures that the company is applying in the area surrounding the plant and that is enabling the generation of a collaboration network with more than a dozen public and private entities in Ceuta.
José Ribelles, Manager of Operations and Maintenance for Endesa's Gas Plants, Inmaculada Fiteni, Manager of the company's CSV plans, Antonio Cantarella, head of the power plants in the Balearic Islands, Ceuta and Melilla and Ignacio Sabugal, Manager of the plant, were responsible for welcoming the institutional representative of the Autonomous City, and, after learning in detail about the operation of this infrastructure and the social development plans, they toured the interior of this historic plant that directly employs about 40 workers and indirectly another 30.
"It is an honour for us to welcome the government of Ceuta to this plant that is not only iconic in terms of the technology and environmental measures applied, but also in terms of the involvement of the city itself in its activity," said José Ribelles who highlighted the history of the plant and the different actions being taken with regard to its activity.
Ms Deu congratulated Endesa on "the work being done in these installations and the social benefits that involve the local community for the benefit of everyone, it is a perfect synergy for Ceuta", she concluded.
CSV Plans
"Endesa has designed a plan to accompany the operation and maintenance of the plant, focussing on the social environment, innovation and the environment", explained Inmaculada Fiteni, who explained the main actions taken within this framework with social actions ranging from contracting local companies to energy efficiency workshops, innovative actions such as management certificates and consumption optimisation, and environmental actions including emission control, waste recovery and the donation of material to animal protection associations.
The manager of Endesa's CSV plans pointed out that the main actions undertaken in this plan feature training courses organised for students undergoing Vocational Training at the IES Almina and the IES Abyla, with the participation of students from 15 to 18 years old. The courses that are currently underway are aimed at training students in different areas of the energy sector, in order to provide future job opportunities in this sector.
In accordance with this philosophy of integration, Endesa also announced its collaboration with a non-profit organisation in Ceuta with which it is working to integrate people with disabilities into working life. In this regard, an agreement is being concluded to enable members of this association to personally attend practice sessions in the power station itself.
Endesa's CSV plan also includes informative actions with NGOs and other social entities with which it is working on the dissemination of energy efficiency workshops so that professionals who work with the most vulnerable people can provide all the necessary information on issues such as efficiency. Endesa also organises educational programmes through the Endesa Foundation, with the aim of making the world of energy known to educational centres in Ceuta.
One of the recent actions completed by Endesa within the framework of its CSV plan is the collaboration with the Ceuta School of Art and the Ministry of Education and Culture of the Autonomous City, with whom it has collaborated to design and draw a mural that pays tribute to the Ceuta-Tetuán railway line and that will be painted on the walls of the plant.
This symbiosis with the environment is also an integral part of an action promoted by a former worker in the plant to donate 600 m2 of wooden panels that have been used to build more than 114 homes for 400 stray cats in collaboration with the Cat Community in the Autonomous City.
But this is not the only material that the power station has donated. Endesa has announced the initiation of a process for the donation of equipment and medical material from the former health service in the plant to the Ministry of Health of the Autonomous City. The company is also collaborating with other associations for the donation of more efficient lighting from the offices themselves, and the donation of wood and other materials to other local associations with the aim of promoting the circularity of the plant's different elements.
History of the power station
The Ceuta power station began producing electricity in Ceuta in 1955, when the first of the steam-driven engines known as "Móviles" was installed. The plant currently consists of ten generator, with the last one being put into service in 2011, with a total installed capacity of 97.4 MW enough to guarantee meeting the demand of the City of Ceuta.
Since 2002, the Ceuta diesel power station has maintained an Environmental Management System developed in accordance with international UNE standards under ISO 14001 and since 2010 in accordance with the requirements of the EMAS regulation. The provision to the public of an Environmental Declaration is another step in the ongoing improvement of management and transparency in environmental behaviour.
