We promote sustainable mobility to achieve a zero emissions model

At Endesa we are focusing on electric mobility as a key tool in our commitment to combating climate change.

At Endesa we firmly believe in electric vehicles as a key tool within our commitment to combating climate change.

Accordingly, we are promoting projects in different areas, ranging from the technological area to the commercial area, promoting electric mobility as an instrument for achieving a zero-emission energy model.

In November 2018, we launched the most ambitious project carried out to date to promote electric mobility in Spain: the Recharging Infrastructures Plan. The objective is to eliminate one of the main barriers when switching to electric mobility — access to recharging points. The plan consists of installing 8,500 public recharging points and more than 100,000 private points between 2019 and 2023, so that drivers can comfortably travel around the country in their electric vehicles.

The other initiatives that we are carrying out can be grouped into three complementary lines of action: the sales offer, promotion and publicising and technological development.

In 2015, we launched ecaR (Endesa self-charging club), a pioneering initiative in Spain to support electric mobility and sustainable transport and tourism.

Promotion and dissemination

At Endesa, we are pioneers in addressing a comprehensive approach to mobility by integrating the actions that promote the different areas and business units in this area.

We believe in a necessary change to the current model of urban and long-distance electricity mobility that will contribute to the fight against climate change and to the improvement of people's quality of life, in addition to optimising the economic efficiency in managing the mobility of the company's employees.

 

 

The 2018-2020 Sustainable Mobility Plan: e-Movement                          

e-Movement is the plan that reflects the package of sustainable mobility measures that we are promoting in the 2018-2020 period among our employees and fleets. The plan seeks to homogenise, under a single integrated vision, all lines of action we carry out regarding mobility.

The global environmental impact objectives of the e-Movement are the following savings:

  • 650.885 routes travelled.

  • 9.500 tonnes of CO2 emissions.

  • 5.200 kg of NOx emissions.

  • 550 kg of NOx emissions.

  • < Noise.

Within this initiative, we include the Electrical Mobility Plan for Employees that has enabled Endesa employees to test the advantages of the electric vehicle and become ambassadors of future mobility.

In addition, at Endesa, we have launched a plan to electrify the fleet of vehicles representing our managers. Currently, 23% drive plug-in hybrid vehicles. The target for 2021 is to increase the number of electric vehicles in its fleet fivefold from the current 4% to 15%, raising the share of hybrid vehicles to over 20%, and eliminating 25% of combustion-engine vehicles in five years. All these steps should drive down emissions by 20%.

For work-related travel, employees at various Endesa headquarters have electric vehicles available through the e-car sharing service. So far, more than 200,000 km have been travelled with them, saving more than 24 tonnes of CO2.

Technological development

At Endesa we actively take part in the development of electric mobility solutions: we foster the development of fast charging, we encourage agreements with electric vehicle manufacturers and we take part in consortiums and international projects.

Vehicle to Grid (V2G). This system enables the electric connection and flow between the grid and the vehicle, so it can be charged but also act as a generator, producing electricity for households or feeding the grid. At Endesa we collaborate with the Enel Group's initiatives to demonstrate the validity of this technology in international projects. 

Fasto V2G (Vehicle to Grid). This is a bidirectional electric charger, capable of charging and discharging a vehicle depending on the requirements of the electrical system.

Sunbatt. This project studies the possible second service life for batteries used in electric vehicles, to prevent them from becoming disposable products.

Zeus. This project studies the feasibility of more efficient and economical urban electric buses.  In this area, we have developed ULTRAFAST, an ultrafast 400 kW charger for heavy vehicles. The first was installed in Barcelona in collaboration with Metropolitan Transports of Barcelona (TMB). This system enables 80% of a bus battery to be charged in just 5 minutes.

Victoria Project (Vehicle Initiative Consortium for Transport Operation and Road Inductive Applications). We launched this project in 2015 together with a consortium of another four companies and three research organisations for the development of the first dynamic inductive charging lane for electric vehicles in Spain. The aim is to charge the vehicle while it is moving.

CIRVE (Fast charging points located along the Iberian EU Corridors). A European project with the participation of 8 institutions with the aim of deploying a network of 40 fast charging points in urban and peri-urban areas and boosting the existence of these infrastructures in Spain.

PALOMA (Prototype For Alternative Operation Of Mobility Assets). This project is aimed at the integration of a new fast charging system for electric buses and the analysis of its impact on the electric distribution grid. The proposal is financed by the CDTI via the FEDER-INNTERCONECTA 2016 Programme and it will be developed in Malaga.

We also took part in what was the largest electric mobility demonstration project in Spain: ZEM2ALL (Zero Emission Mobility to All). An initiative we headed together with Mitsubishi over four years and which enabled us to assess the impact in terms of contaminating emission levels and energy consumption within a community. Over the period in which the project took place,  4.6 million kilometres were covered with zero emissions and over 100,000 vehicle charging services were carried out which prevented the emission into the atmosphere of 330 TN of CO2.

ULTRAFAST. A programme aimed at the development and installation of an ultra-fast 400kW charger, to offer this service to all the heavy electric vehicles in Barcelona. The charger was opened in 2016 and in January 2017, the first two passenger buses started operating.

SMARTCHARGING. This project is centred on the development of a platform that allows management of multiple electric vehicle chargers.
