Since the American, Schuyler Skaats Wheeler, invented the fan in 1886, many households have turned to it as temperatures rise.
We will start by listing the advantages of fans over other systems.
1. Air conditioners are cheaper
Fans are much cheaper than air conditioning devices and installation. In addition, their consumption is significantly lower. For example, a standing fan has an approximate power of 0.9 kW. If we talk about a ceiling fan, the power is reduced to 0.6 kW. To give you an idea, a toaster or lamp has a similar power. To cool a room of 8 square metres, an air conditioner would have a power of 1.5 kW. From an energy efficiency point of view, fans are much more recommendable.
2. They are easy to install
Fans, unlike air conditioning, are easy to install. Standing and column fans only need a space to place them and a plug to connect them. Some fans can be installed on the wall using a bracket, so you will only need a drill, a drill bit, dowels and screws to attach it.
You can also install ceiling fans, which are installed as if they were lights. As in the previous case, a drill, drill bit, dowels and screws will help you to attach it.
Air conditioners need ventilation installed in the home, with equipment outside, if it is general. If you opt for a device for a specific room, you will need install two pieces of equipment and provide output to the outside. The installation is therefore much more complex and expensive.
Finally, in the case of standing fans or columns, it should be noted that they are portable, with the advantage of being able to move it from one room to another or even to another property.
3. Easy maintenance
Keeping a fan clean is a very easy and quick process with the occasional help of a damp cloth and cleaning product. And they don't need servicing.
Air conditioners require frequent filter cleans and other maintenance.
4. They are healthier than air conditioning
Fans are limited to moving air, enhancing the feeling of freshness. Therefore, they lack the cooling power of air conditioners. Being exposed to air conditioners can lead to ailments such as headaches or contractures.
5. They are decorative
You can choose the appropriate fan model for your room.
6. They are versatile
Each type of fan can be perfectly adapted to a given space and function. Size and power are aspects to take into account when choosing a model.
Types of fan
1. Ceiling fans
Their main qualities are space saving, their ability to cool large spaces and their decorative possibilities. There are models with more or less blades and different speeds. Some people combine this type of device with air conditioning to enhance the cool feeling.
2. Tower fans
This is the most popular type of fan. Their benefits include their small size and stylised design. They work by bringing air from the ground to the ceiling, distributing it evenly. Due to the nature of this product, they are ready for use (they do not require installation), can be easily transported and are easy to store.
3. Table or standing fans
Their strong point is their versatility, since they can be placed on any surface and can be easily moved. They consume the least of all types of fans, which implies a remarkable saving compared to other options.
4. Fans without blades
This is a recent development. They are different from traditional fans because they do not have blades. They have a motor that collects air from the bottom, sucks it up to the top and expels it through the grooves. Their main advantage is that they don't have blades, so they are safer for households with children and pets.
5. Nebuliser
This model has a space to store water, which gradually evaporates while turning the blades, increasing and distributing the feeling of coolness.
6. Floor fan
They are best suited for open spaces (patios, terraces). They move the air from below. They usually consume less than other types of fans and they tend to be cheaper.
Tips when buying a fan
1. Think about what you are going to need it for, what room/rooms you want it in, the available space, etc. Do not forget to take into account the power of the device you choose, to know if it will fit your needs. Don't overlook their energy efficiency labelling either.
2. Watch out for noise: test the fan before you buy it. Test the sound it makes in each of its functions or speeds.
3. Stay away from fans with a heat function: when fans have a heat function, they use much more energy. It is almost preferable to buy a separate heater to use when you need it.
4. Look at the volume flow, the number of rotors and the diameter to see if the model fits what you are looking for.
5. Don't forget to check these aspects:
a) Is it able to orient airflow? Does it have oscillation function?
b) Does it have enough stability, even in its most powerful mode?
c) Does it have a protective grille for children or pets?
d) Does it have different speeds or functions?
e) Does it have a remote control or WiFi?
Choose the fan that best suits your needs and cool off this summer while maintaining energy efficiency.
