- Endesa X has installed and commissioned two photovoltaic power stations for self-consumption of 1.3 MWp, so the University of Jaén can replace part of its energy supply with a clean and renewable source
- With these new facilities in the Las Lagunillas Campus and the Linares Science and Technology Campus, the University of Jaén will avoid the emission of more than 700 tonnes of CO2 into the atmosphere per year.
- This project has been possible thanks to the on-site PPA signed between both parties. The University of Jaén has not had to make an initial investment, establishing a fixed and flat payment for the energy coming from the photovoltaic facility for the duration of the contract.
Two photovoltaic power stations built by Endesa X on the campuses of the University of Jaén (UJA) enable the university to self-consume 20% of its energy supply.
Endesa X, the energy services subsidiary of Endesa, and the University of Jaén began working together a year ago to design a self-consumption system that would make university campuses more efficient and sustainable.
This design will become a reality when it becomes operational at the Las Lagunillas Campus in Jaén and the Science and Technology Campus of Linares. The two photovoltaic power stations built by Endesa X will allow 20% of the energy consumed by the University of Jaén on both campuses to come from self-consumption.
These infrastructures located on the roofs and canopies of the Jaén and Linares Campuses will produce 2,141 MWh per year (1,762 MWh in the Las Lagunillas Campus and 380 MWh in the Linares Campus), while avoiding the emission into the atmosphere of 700 tonnes of CO2 per year, equivalent to planting more than 71,000 trees.
This project has been made possible thanks to an innovative formula that Endesa X is implementing and that has been signed with the University of Jaén: An on-site PPA contract. This agreement signed between the University of Jaén and Endesa implies that the educational entity does not have to provide any initial investment; Endesa X will assume that cost, so the university can allocate its resources to other initiatives.
In this type of contract, a fixed price associated with the energy produced by the self-consumption facilities is established and Endesa X will be in charge of the operation, maintenance and exploitation of the installed infrastructure during the 15 years of the contract. This type of agreement will give the University of Jaén more certainty about part of its energy costs for the duration of the contract. From then on, the University of Jaén will fully manage the two facilities and will continue working on the path of becoming increasingly sustainable.
