- The charging stations will be in the car parks of HiperDino and SuperDino, two of the three brands under which DinoSol Supermarkets, the leading food chain in the archipelago and the only 100% Canarian regional chain, operates.
- Thanks to this alliance, by integrating HiperDino's infrastructure, Endesa's public charging network on the islands will exceed 455 stations, the largest and with the greatest reach in the archipelago, as well as the best quality: 60% of the network is semi-fast and 40% is fast and ultra-fast (more than 150 kW).
- This alliance not only brings electric mobility to a wider public in the archipelago, but also introduces for the first time the possibility to pay by credit card at the HiperDino charger itself.
- With the development of this electric vehicle charging network, a business relationship of almost three decades between the two companies has been strengthened. In addition to being a renewable energy customer, HiperDino has also opted for self-consumption with Endesa.
- HiperDino is the largest employer in the Canary Islands, with more than 9,000 workers.
Endesa and HiperDino continue to advance together in the decarbonisation process of the Canary Islands. It has been almost three decades of collaboration in matters of energy, and now, in the middle of the electrification process, the Canarian distribution market leader takes another step closer to bringing electric mobility to the citizens of the islands.
Endesa and HiperDino have signed a contract worth 1.3 million euros to deploy one hundred charging stations for electric vehicles, strategically spread across 32 HiperDino car parks. HiperDino occupies a prominent position in the national ranking as a regional company in the food sector that creates employment, with more than 9,000 workers at the moment.
In this first initial phase, an advanced charging infrastructure will be implemented that will include 70 semi-fast charging stations of 22kW, 24 fast charging stations of 60kW and 4 ultra-fast charging stations of 150kW, expecting them to be up and running in 2024. The charging stations will be installed in the car parks of its stores on the islands of Gran Canaria, Tenerife, Fuerteventura, Lanzarote and La Palma.
"This agreement marks a significant milestone for sustainability in the archipelago and is a momentous step for electric mobility in the Canary Islands. Our collaboration with HiperDino reflects the shared commitment of Endesa and the retail chain to offering innovative solutions and facilitating the transition towards emission-free mobility for our customers," said Elena Bernárdez, Endesa's Director of Electric Mobility, during the signing of the agreement.
The alliance between HiperDino and Endesa not only brings electric mobility to a wider public in the archipelago, but also introduces payment methods accessible through POS devices, in addition to the regular Endesa network charging app, available for iOS and Android. This way, customers will simply have to arrive at the charging station, select the option they want to use, app or card, and start their session. A new format to make the charging process faster and easier.
Rubén Molowny, Director of Maintenance and Energy Management at HiperDino, explains that "in the era of sustainability and climate change mitigation, the transition to electric vehicles has become imperative. However, this transition cannot succeed without adequate and accessible charging infrastructure. Hence the importance of reaching agreements such as the one we signed today and that will make possible the installation of charging stations in 32 of our establishments of the HiperDino and SuperDino brands." He adds that "we continue to study projects along the same lines that will soon see the light of day."
Meanwhile, for Dara Sánchez, Head of Sustainability at the HiperDino, "the company's commitment to environmental sustainability also includes reducing dependence on fossil fuels and promoting innovation and technology. That is why we continue to work on measures such as the installation of charging stations for electric vehicles and, with this, provide customers who opt for electric mobility an additional service at our stores."
More public charging stations in the Canary Islands
This new network of charging infrastructure at HiperDino stores is in addition to the one Endesa has already deployed in the Canary Islands. In total, more than 455 charging stations will be installed, with 60% featuring the semi-fast network (22 KW); and the other 40%, fast (60 KW) and ultra-fast (more than 150 kW). This provides a much higher value proposition for end customers who need to cover their charging needs.
Endesa already has a network of more than 5,500 publicly accessible charging stations installed in Spain. Of these, nearly one in 10 is located in the Canary Islands. Of the total, more than 600 stations use ultra-fast technology, with powers between 150 kW and 350 kW, and are mostly located in areas close to roads. The focus remains on further expanding the network by accompanying the market and providing recharging solutions where they are needed.
Commitment to the decarbonisation of the Canary Islands
Once again, both companies join forces to provide the people of the Canary Islands with a service that will provide a new standard in sustainable mobility, thus meeting the environmental demands and expectations of the citizens of the Islands. Both companies have been walking together for almost three decades on the path towards reducing their environmental footprint through the electrification of their consumption.
HiperDino has been Endesa's energy customer since its inception. Moreover, in August 2021, it inaugurated one of the largest photovoltaic self-consumption installations in the Canary Islands at its logistics centre in Telde (Gran Canaria), which allows it to cover 16% of its electricity needs with zero emissions and reduce its CO2 emissions by 305 tonnes per year.
In addition to this first self-consumption project, four more installations have been added, for a total of 1.7 MW, which will allow it to generate an additional 3,000 MWh per year and thus reduce its consumption in these centres by 20.8%. These four installations will become operational this year.
Endesa in the Canary Islands
One out of every four MW that Endesa generated last year in the Canary Islands came from renewable energy, in an output that is growing significantly every year. The largest growth between 2011 and 2023 came from wind power, jumping from 145 KW to almost 700 KW. Likewise, the solar power Endesa generated increased output in the Canary Islands electricity system from 139 MW in 2011 to 240 MW in 2023.
The company's contribution in renewable energies in the Canary Islands has gone from 8% in 2011 to 20.5% in 2023. Endesa's commitment to the archipelago has been constant, but it will intensify in the coming years to even out the production of clean energy on all the islands. Specifically, by island, El Hierro stands out, thanks to the Gorona del Viento project, which allows a contribution of 48.5% of renewables to its island's electricity system. It is followed by the island of Gran Canaria, with almost 25% of production, and Tenerife, with a contribution of renewables of just over 20%. After them are Fuerteventura and Lanzarote, with just over 15 percent; these islands form a single electrical system thanks to their submarine cable connection. Renewables on La Palma accounted for almost nine percent, while on the island of La Gomera, there was no renewable energy production.
Endesa, through its renewables subsidiary Enel Green Power España, manages 15 wind farms in the Canary Islands with a total installed capacity of 63.7 MW, in which it participates along with different public and private institutions. By island, they are distributed as follows: 5 parks in Gran Canaria, 5 in Tenerife, 2 in La Palma, 1 in Fuerteventura, 1 in Lanzarote and 1 in La Gomera. Endesa is also currently working on the development of four photovoltaic energy projects in the Canary Islands, several of which are equipped with state-of-the-art battery storage.
HiperDino, a model company
HiperDino ended 2023 with a turnover of more than 1,460 million euros, positioning it as one of the companies with the highest turnover volume in the Canary Islands; in addition to being the largest employer and occupying a prominent position in the national ranking as a company in the food industry.
It is also the leader in the islands in terms of market share and sales area, with 243 physical stores, four logistics centres, two exclusive online purchase preparation centres and an online shopping channel.
In 2022, it generated 2.50% of the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) of the Canary Islands, and its impact on employment represented 3.02% of the employed population.
Last year alone, it broke the record for store openings, with ten new stores. It also carried out ten comprehensive renovations, investing nearly 40 million euros.
It has welcomed in the year 2024 with large-scale projects mainly related to new stores and renovations, as well as the completion of the expansion project at the HiperDino logistics centre in Güímar (Tenerife).
For HiperDino, integrating sustainability into the company's strategy brings with it an opportunity for transformation from different perspectives.
That is why in 2021 it created the Sustainability Area and, hand in hand with all departments and the DinoSol Foundation, it promotes and carries out projects and initiatives that help to protect the environment, improve quality of life, promote efficiency and save resources, strengthen the economy and promote corporate social responsibility.
Its fight against food waste has led it to launch its own project, Alimentos conVida, which, since 2020, has avoided 1,742 tonnes of food waste from the chain's stores, benefiting 38 social organisations on the archipelago every day.
At the moment, 145 of its stores and three of its logistics centres are participating in this social and environmental programme, donating fresh products such as fruit, vegetables, meat, fish and bread, and helping 14,243 users of the 38 centres spread across Fuerteventura, Gran Canaria, Lanzarote, Tenerife and La Palma.
