- The company, which today received authorisation from the Ministry of Ecological Transition to close the facility, has a portfolio of wind projects that generates more than 1,000 MW, most of which are linked to strategic industrial initiatives for the community's economic development.
- Endesa has also embarked upon an investment campaign, as part of which it has secured the involvement of Sentury Tire and Ence, which will set up factories on the company's land in As Pontes.
- The wind projects developed by the company in Galicia will be decisive in reactivating the Alcoa industrial complex in A Mariña, in the province of Lugo.
The Ministry of Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge today have the green light for the closure of the As Pontes plant. The commissioning of a new renewable power as part of the national energy system has made it possible for its operator, REE, to report favourably to the dismantling of facilities that had been rendered uncompetitive as a result of the constant increase in CO2 emission costs and that currently only had one of the plant's four groups, in service since 1976, in operation. This was Endesa's last coal-fired power plant that remained in operation on the Iberian Peninsula. This means that Endesa continues to make progress in meeting the decarbonisation and energy transition objectives of its activities.
At the same time, the company has reaffirmed its commitment to Galicia with the promotion of a social and economic development plan for the region, including a portfolio of wind projects with access and connection to the grid for a total of 1,000 MW (650 MW with DIA, environmental impact statement, already approved), most linked to strategic industrial initiatives for the community's future, such as the reopening of the Alcoa plant in Lugo.
This wind energy development is yet to receive the necessary government permits and internal authorisation from the company. Counting the business initiatives promoted in cooperation with other companies, such as Sentury Tire and Ence, which will be developed on the land formerly occupied by the plant, the stable, direct jobs created will be higher than the number of jobs at the former thermal power plant.
What's more the company will support the generation of new business opportunities in its port terminal in El Ferrol, installing a wind logistics centre to serve Spain as a whole and promote training to for staff to specialise in the assembly of wind farms and the dismantling of thermal plants.
