The port of Porto achieves power consumption savings of 70% in its ligthing thanks to Endesa

• The agreement signed between Endesa and the “Terminal de Carga Geral e de Granéis de Leixões” (Leixões General Loading and Bulk Terminal), one of the contractor companies at the port of Leixões in Porto, has entailed the replacement of 184 luminaires with LED technology, providing a saving of 60,000 euros per year.
• The port of Leixões in Porto exports to over 184 countries and moves an average of 1.4 million tons of goods per month, this representing 25% of Portuguese international trade. 
• In August, Endesa was once again awarded the lighting contract for the port of Leixões for one year, worth 3 million euros.

Endesa has signed an energy efficiency agreement with the Terminal de Carga Geral e de Granéis de Leixões (Leixões General Loading and Bulk Terminal), one of the contractor companies at the port of Leixões, achieving a saving of 70% in the lighting power consumption of the port of Porto.

Located in Matosinhos, it exports to over 184 countries worldwide and moves an average of 1.4 million tons of goods per month, this representing 25% of Portuguese international trade. 

The agreement signed between Endesa and Terminal de Carga Geral e de Granéis de Leixões, which has a duration of 5 years, has entailed the replacement of 184 luminaires with high-efficiency LED technology in several lighting towers in the port. These towers are between 15 and 25 metres tall.

The operation carried out in 33% of the port has entailed a considerable reduction in lighting power consumption, which has dropped from 800 MWh per year to less than 250 MWh. This reduction translates into an annual saving of 60,000 euros and a reduction in the release of CO2 of approximately 227 tons per year, equivalent to planting 73,000 trees.

Furthermore, in August Endesa was awarded the contract for the power supply to the entire port of Leixões in Porto, the second largest in Portugal. The value of this contract, with a duration of 12 months, is nearly 3 million euros, and will enable a saving of nearly 250,000 euros in the port’s electricity bill.

Endesa has operated in the deregulated Portuguese market since May 2002, and leads the industrial customer sector in Portugal with a 25% share. In 2015, Endesa supplied over 7,500 GWh, and has over 174,000 customers in the Portuguese electricity marketEndesa is becoming a benchmark in the energy efficiency sector in Portugal thanks to the more than 40 projects it has been awarded in the first six months of 2016, entailing investment of over 2 million euros. 

Endesa is promoting different energy efficiency products to companies in various sectors, from distribution chains and industry to public administration and services (such as the port of Leixões itself). These products include the installation of photovoltaic solar panels for self-consumption, the replacement of luminaires with LEDs (again, as with the port of Leixões); providing customers with higher voltages, or natural gas projects. All this is due to Endesa adapting the efficiency model most suited to its customers’ needs, offering them anything  from turnkey products to investment projects.
