- 40,113 street lights were replaced with more efficient lighting optics, cutting emissions by 4,000 tonnes of CO2 per annum.
- The projects involved the hiring of local labour to carry out installation and maintenance work, contributing to regional development.
- In total Endesa manages more than 80,000 street lights, providing service to half a million people.
Enel Sole and Endesa cut the energy consumption of eight Spanish towns by 64% in 2014. Efficient lighting sources were installed in the streets of Los Alcázares in Murcia, Móstoles in Madrid, Batea in Tarragona, Manacor in the Balearic Islands and the Andalusian towns of Vélez Rubio (Almería), Pruna (Seville), Écija (Seville) and Almodóvar del Río (Córdoba), reducing emissions by 4,321.43 tonnes of CO2 a year.
In total, 40,113 street lights were replaced with more efficient lighting optics, giving rise to financial savings for town councils. In addition to cutting the towns' electricity bills, these projects also involved hiring local labour to carry out installation and maintenance work, contributing to regional development and bringing a boost to SMEs in the towns.
To date, 16 Spanish towns have benefited from the efficient lighting initiative rolled out by Enel Sole and Endesa since 2011. The towns opting for this technology in 2014 join those which implemented the same changes in previous years: Bollullos de la Mitación and Castro del Río in 2011, Mérida (Extremadura), Muro de Alcoy (Valencia), Fuente Álamo and Abarán (Murcia) in 2012 and Rincón de la Victoria (Andalusia) and Mora de Ebro (Catalonia) in 2013.
In these 16 towns, an average of 90% of installations have been renewed, with energy savings of over 50% in most cases. In total, Enel Sole and Endesa manage more than 80,000 street lights, providing service to half a million people.
The technology rolled out by Enel Sole and Endesa is based on the use of efficient lights with smart controls fitted at every lighting point. This improves lighting quality and leads to significant energy savings. The life span of the lighting module is also extended to over 60,000 hours, while the lighting network gains flexibility as each street light can be programmed independently.
These projects help local councils to drive up energy efficiency, cut CO2 emissions, and increase the availability of street lighting as faults can be detected in real time.
E-mobility
In addition to the new energy-efficient lighting and thanks to Enel and Endesa's commitment to promoting e-mobility, these eight towns have benefited from the roll-out of electric vehicles (vans, cars and scooters, depending on the town) and associated charging networks. A total of seven charging points have been installed and seven vehicles supplied.
Endesa also offers councils its E-mobility Pack which involves the gradual replacement of internal fleets of fuel-run vehicles with electric ones, the installation of a charging point for every vehicle replaced and other value-added mobility services, such as controlling and monitoring the infrastructure, managing the fleets and optimising routes. These turnkey projects will run for four years and initially include councils in Catalonia, the Balearics, Andalusia and Extremadura, before being extended to other regions. Agreements were reached with three councils in 2014, resulting in the installation of 15 charging points and the supply of 13 electric vehicles.
All the projects are monitored by Endesa's Smart Grid Service Centre in Seville, used to manage and control the energy-efficient lighting and electric vehicle charging network installed in Spain by Endesa to date.
