The main differences between retailers and distribution companies
The company you should call when there is an electrical fault in your street or neighbourhood is not the same as the one that sends you your bills. It is very easy to understand the differences between retailers and distribution companies:
Distribution company
A distribution company is responsible for ensuring that the energy arrives correctly at your home. You cannot choose yours, since it depends on the area where you live.
The distribution company is responsible for fixing any faults affecting your energy supply. It is also responsible for your meter (since it is its property) so it will be responsible for sending your consumption readings to the distribution company, as well as repairing faults in your meter and the installation of digital meters.
Retailer
It is the retailer which offers you various tariffs, advises you and answers your questions. You are totally free to choose your retailer and you can switch whenever you want.
Bear in mind that there are two different energy retailer markets: the free market , which offers you a huge range of tariffs from various companies. And the regulated market, made up of few companies that offer just one tariff: the PVPC tariff.
