- The leading company in inspection, testing and certification was one of the first in its sector to implement a strategy to reduce the carbon footprint of its centres.
- As part of the deployment of 21 photovoltaic plants for self-consumption led by Endesa X, TÜV SUD will be able to generate up to 60% of the energy that its stations need to operate.
TÜV SÜD, a leading international company in high quality, sustainability and safety solutions, has joined forces with Endesa X, Endesa's energy services subsidiary, to develop a national plan that promotes the energy savings of its Vehicle Technical Inspection (ITV) stations, through the installation of solar panels for self-consumption. The project, for which installation of all the panels is due to end in May this year, will help these centres to generate up to 60% of the electricity they need to operate in a clean way.
The self-consumption system designed by Endesa X is based on the installation of a total of 802 photovoltaic modules at 21 ITV stations located in Castile-León, Castile-La Mancha, La Rioja, the Community of Madrid and Catalonia. The total installed power amounts to 450 kWp, equivalent to an average power per project of 22 kW and an annual self-consumption of 520 MWh, thus avoiding the emission of up to 113 tonnes of CO2 each year, equivalent to the absorption capacity of 670 trees/year.
To this end, Raúl Sanguino, CEO of TÜV SÜD in Spain and Portugal, indicated that "our aim is to promote the use of clean energies that help us reduce the carbon footprint generated by our activity, thus contributing to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) set out in the United Nations 2030 Agenda. We are aware that ITV stations involve a high energy expenditure, so establishing sustainable management for them is one of our priorities in terms of sustainability".
In turn, Jose Carlos Fernández, head of B2B Sales Channels at Endesa X, stressed that "the project has been developed in parallel at different ITV stations and in the space of just five months thanks to the ecosystem of partners that we have available to our customers". In this sense, Fernández pointed out that "we have taken care of the entire process, from the technical and economic solution to the execution, legalisation and application for subsidies, facilitating the management process for TÜV SÜD from start to finish, without affecting the performance of its activity at any time, meaning they could continue with their inspections without the works getting in the way".
The project is part of TÜV SÜD's transversal strategy to decarbonise its facilities, as well as strengthen and improve the services it provides in the ITV sector in Spain, where it currently runs more than 30 centres. The company has set itself the short-term goal of reducing its global emissions and achieving carbon neutrality by 2025.
This action strengthens the relationship between TÜV SÜD and Endesa. To cover the remaining energy that the stations need to carry out their activity, the leading company in inspection services has an agreement in place with the Endesa group's supplier, Endesa Energía, through which 3.4 GWh of energy is supplied annually with Guarantees of Renewable Origin (GdO).
