- The most versatile multipurpose enclosure in Spain has signed a supply contract for renewable energy with Endesa for the next three years
- Through the subsidiary Endesa X, a photovoltaic solar plant with a 518 kWp capacity will also be built to meet 20% of its energy requirements and enable it to save on its energy bill and further reduce its environmental footprint.
- Endesa has recently become a sponsor for the enclosure to continue promoting and supporting culture through music and basketball, as this venue hosts events that include massive concerts and large sporting events, as well as some in a smaller format to also accommodate new talents and shows
The WiZink Center, the most versatile multi-purpose enclosure in Spain, has chosen Endesa and its subsidiary Endesa X to make progress in its decarbonisation process. Firstly, the energy company has entered as a sustainable sponsor of the enclosure and, secondly two agreements have been signed to ensure that the energy for the mass concerts and large sporting events, as well as those in smaller formats to accommodate new talent and shows is 100% green. This will become a reality thanks to a supply contract for electricity from renewable sources and the installation of a large photovoltaic solar plant on the roof of the installation.
This drive towards sustainability will prevent the emission into the atmosphere of 3,341 tons of CO2 over the next three years, the equivalent of what can be absorbed by 167,055 trees in this period of time.
The energy agreement, which will remain in force until December 2024, is a fixed-price energy contract that will meet all the enclosure's electricity consumption requirements. This amounts to 4.3 GWh/year that will be 100% renewable and certified with Guarantees of Renewable Origin (GdO in Spanish), which is supported by a commitment from both parties to the environment and sustainability and provides stability for the price of energy, an important factor in times as turbulent as the current ones. Endesa actually gave tailor-made assessment before signing the contract in order to achieve competitive prices.
What puts the icing on the cake with regard to how the WiZink Centre consumes energy is that it has also entrusted Endesa X, Endesa's energy services subsidiary, with the completion of a self-consumption project that will enable them to be 20% self-sufficient. In other words, they will be able to meet almost a quarter of the energy requirements for their activity as a result of the installation of 960 photovoltaic modules on the roof of the enclosure, thus saving on their energy bill and further reducing their environmental footprint.
The photovoltaic solar installation will be constructed by Endesa X, which also offers comprehensive assessment to the companies throughout the process for managing existing support for self-consumption installations, which result in a significant reduction of the installation costs for the panels, making the return on the investment even more attractive. Endesa X manages these grants for its customers, as well as providing them with the advice they need to choose the best photovoltaic installation option.
Sustainable sponsorship
With this sustainable sponsorship, Endesa strengthens its position as a promoter of ecologically aware events and continues to work to promote and support the country's culture, as well as being the main engine behind Spanish basketball for 11 years. These two characteristics unite Endesa with the WiZink Centre, because firstly basketball continues to be a very important part of the activity at the venue and secondly, it is a benchmark for musical activity at a domestic and international level, attracting more than 100 musical events to Madrid every year. By way of example, the venue hosted the final of the Endesa Basketball League between Real Madrid and Barça and the artists performing in the coming weeks include Camilo, Alicia Keys, Queen and Rosalía.
Endesa's sponsorship strategy is based on what we call "sponsorship with a purpose" that goes beyond a merely financial contribution and focusses on bringing sport, especially basketball, and music, to all audiences as a clearly social activity and providing support for actions that help in the sustainable transformation of both sectors. Communities with interests relating to basketball and culture have also been created. These include Endesa Basket Lover and Endesa Music Lover who are provided with unique experiences and are listened to with a view to promoting social projects. All this with the aim of adding value to society in the issues that interest it most and bringing the company closer to new audiences, especially younger people.
Endesa's commitment to decarbonisation
Endesa is also firmly committed to energy transition and has reaffirmed this pledge in its new strategic plan for 2022-2024. In addition to being the integrated electricity company with the lowest emissions in the Iberian Peninsula, the company brought its commitment to zero emissions forward by ten years, to 2040, one decade ahead of the limit set by the European Union to eliminate greenhouse gases. By way of an example, 92. 2% of Endesa's mainland energy production will be free of CO2 emissions by 2024.
Furthermore, 89% of the investment planned for Endesa over the next three years is directly related to the UN Sustainable Development Goals, thus aligning its sustainability strategy within this universal framework.
