- The technical committee of the Ministry for the Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge, which met to select the winners of the tender, has provisionally granted Endesa the right to connect 953 MW, with the possibility of expanding this to the tender’s total 1,200 MW.
- The company’s proposal for the Andorra hub is based on the hybridization of renewable technologies, energy storage and green hydrogen to decarbonize local companies, together with collaboration with local companies in industries manufacturing components for the renewable energy and hydrogen value chains, social projects and agreements with local stakeholders in the primary and tertiary sectors.
Endesa, through its renewable subsidiary Enel Green Power España, has been provisionally awarded the Andorra Just Transition tender, securing the right to connect 953 MW and the option to confirm up to the total 1,200 MW. This was decided by the technical committee of the Ministry for the Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge, which selected the provisional winners of the tender.
Endesa’s proposal for the Andorra hub stands out particularly for its innovative approach, combining solar and wind renewable energy projects, energy storage and the development of green hydrogen projects to genuinely decarbonize local industries.
This industrial development goes hand in hand with a long-term social plan, which will create more than 3,500 jobs during the construction of the projects, as well as 300 permanent direct jobs in the area to operate these facilities.
“We are very pleased to have received this provisional award,” said Rafael González, General Manager of Generation at Endesa and of its subsidiary Enel Green Power España, who reaffirmed the company’s commitment to “creating, where there was once a coal-fired power plant, a group of facilities that will hybridize several technologies, including wind, solar, energy storage and green hydrogen. Our commitment is to a real project for the future, creating value for the local community, as we have always done wherever we have developed our industrial activities,” González concluded, recalling that “it is precisely this commitment and the company’s experience that have also enabled us to win international tenders such as the one in Pego, Portugal.”
To carry out this project, Endesa plans to invest more than €1.2 billion. This investment will go towards the construction of five solar plants and five wind farms under a hybridization model, supported by a battery storage system that will make it possible to maximize renewable energy production. In addition, an electrolyzer will be installed to manage surplus energy for the production of green hydrogen. In this regard, Endesa is collaborating with local companies involved in the manufacture of components for the renewable energy and hydrogen value chains.
Endesa has also placed a strong emphasis on training and social and economic development in the area. To this end, a training plan has been designed to facilitate the professional retraining of local residents for sectors such as renewable energy and to create future employment opportunities for unemployed people in the area.
In addition, Endesa’s proposal incorporates various initiatives and projects in the primary and tertiary sectors. To this end, and through a participatory process, Endesa has held meetings with numerous local associations and stakeholders to outline a joint path for the growth and empowerment of the area.
In this social sphere, Endesa will also promote projects aimed primarily at developing sustainable tourism, promoting local commerce and supporting groups of people with disabilities.
