- Today a ship carrying 130,000 tons of coal is expected for it to be stored and reshipped to other destinations.
- Endesa will endeavour to compensate for the closure of the As Pontes thermal power plant by providing Ferrol with traffic from third parties
Endesa will give new life to the port terminal of Ferrol by turning it into a logistics centre for loading, unloading and storage of general and bulk merchandise, serving companies operating in the international market. The first vessel in this new era, the "Maharaj", docks today. This activity will be very beneficial for the port of Ferrol, since it involves double operations, because the cargo arrives and departs by sea, which multiplies the number of services contracted by two.
Endesa has planned an extensive programme of initiatives entitled "Plan Futur-e" to compensate for the closure of the As Pontes thermal power plant. The promotion of port traffic in the Ferrol terminal is framed within this context, where instead of closing the installation, the company has chosen to use it to provide services to third parties which will benefit economic activity in the region. Endesa has already been granted official authorisation to operate with solid bulk and general merchandise.
The "Maharaj" will unload 130,000 tons of Australian coal, which will remain stored in the terminal until the owner of the cargo decides to transport it to another destination in ships of lower capacity. The coal will be unloaded from the ship to the dock using two unloaders and a series of conveyor belts; the storage area occupies 60,000 square metres, and includes a device that guarantees ideal environmental conditions, which are also certified.
Each vessel arriving mobilises a diverse team of professionals, ranging from pilots, tugboats, mooring operators, terminal operators, agents etc. To provide the port services required by a ship you need about fifty people.
The "Maharaj" is registered in Liberia and was built in 2015. It is 300 meters long and 50 meters wide. It has a displacement of 209,472 tons, so it is the largest vessel that has docked at the Endesa terminal and, therefore, in the outer port of Ferrol.
