Endesa promotes an innovative solution to further strengthen the stability of the low-voltage grid in response to the boom in self-consumption

Endesa's distribution network subsidiary, e-distribución, is developing an advanced technological solution to address one of the main challenges of the energy transition: controlling voltage in distribution networks in real time as self-consumption and small- and medium-scale renewable energy installations connected close to consumers continue to grow.

The LV Line Manager device enables real-time monitoring and management of voltage levels in the low-voltage network, facilitating the integration of these renewable energy sources without compromising system stability.

The rapid growth of distributed generation and self-consumption in Spain—with more than 438,500 self-consumption connections already connected to the e-distribución network, of which 45,000 are collective self-consumption installations—is transforming the way the electricity system operates. In this new, more decentralised scenario, electricity no longer flows only from the grid to the customer, but also in the opposite direction when users generate their own energy. This new reality requires advanced tools that enable smart, dynamic and digitalised grid management to ensure the quality and security of electricity supply while addressing challenges such as voltage imbalances, temporary overloads and increased variability in energy flows.

 

Innovation for a smarter and more sustainable grid

e-distribución will launch a pilot project in the distribution networks of Aragón and the Balearic Islands to test this device, which has been designed to address some of the main challenges currently facing the electricity grid. These include overvoltage during periods of high photovoltaic generation—especially around midday—voltage drops during demand peaks, and imbalances resulting from the uneven distribution of users across the network and their different consumption and generation patterns.

The device will also help facilitate the integration of new energy resources, such as renewable energy installations and electric vehicle charging points.

Thanks to the continuous monitoring of electrical parameters such as voltage and current, the system automatically acts to correct imbalances and maintain the proper operation of the grid. 

Its objective is to improve the quality of electricity supply by reducing voltage-related incidents, increasing the grid's capacity to integrate new energy resources, optimising the use of existing infrastructure, and strengthening the resilience and operational flexibility of the network in an increasingly dynamic environment.

Enel Group, of which Endesa is a part, is driving the development of the LV Line Manager as part of an innovation project deployed across different network environments in Italy and Spain to validate its effectiveness under real operating conditions. The challenge was launched through the Enel Open Innovability platform, which is designed to identify and evaluate technological solutions available on the market. After assessing proposals from different manufacturers, the project is now moving into the field-testing phase to validate the device's performance in real-world conditions.
