How to read the natural gas meter
Taking a gas reading is a common procedure among users and the aim is for the bill to reflect the actual consumption made . When your distributor’s technician is unable to do it, take the initiative and send in your gas reading. How? It is very simple and will hardly take you any time.
Natural gas meters do not yet provide data remotely (unlike, for example, digital electricity meters), which is why technicians from the distributors usually stop by homes once every two months to take a reading.
If it is not possible for them to access the meter and they are unable to read it because, for example, no one is home, the estimated bill mechanism can be activated.
"With actual and periodic meter reading, you only pay for what you consume."
Differences between the actual bill and estimated bill
With an actual reading you pay for the m3 of natural gas consumed in your home. What the meter shows, no more no less. But if there is no reading, there are no actual consumption data. What happens then?
To prevent consumption from accumulating (and you eventually receiving an exorbitant bill) the gas retailer issues an estimated bill.
These are not exact, they are calculated using an algorithm based on your consumption history. It is a workaround solution. In the end everything is adjusted in the first actual bill:
- If you have overpaid, it is deducted from the bill.
- If you have underpaid, it is added.
"The estimated bill is corrected when the actual data from your meter arrives. In the end everything balances out."
At Endesa “Without a reading there is no bill”
If we do not have the data from your last reading we do not know how much you have consumed and we feel it is better to wait to know the actual data to issue the bill. How long do we wait?
We have established a period of 2 months in which you will not be charged anything. After this time, if we still do not have an actual reading, you will receive an estimated bill with a 60-day delay.
Bear in mind that this means that, when we have your actual reading, you will get 2 bills in the same month. Why? Because there were two months in which, since you did not receive a bill, you did not pay anything.
What to do in order not to receive estimates? Provide the actual reading
The way to avoid estimated bills is to keep the actual meter reading up to date. The usual thing is for a technician to take the reading every two months, but if it is more convenient you can take it yourself and send it in. Follow these simple steps:
- Locate the meter at your home (it may be inside your home or in a meter room).
- Make a note of the m3 figure on the counter or take a picture of it.
- Send the reading to the distributor in your area through the channels it has enabled.
- Or directly online to Endesa.
“It is not essential to register but we recommend it because you do it only once and your data is saved for the next time.”
When do I have to send my reading?
For this actual meter reading to be the basis for your next gas bill, you must submit it at least 10 business days before your billing period begins.
For example, if you are billed from the 15th to the 15th of each month, the time to do it would end around the second or third day of the second month (taking weekends into account).
If you live in a building with a residents’ community, you can also provide the reading by writing it on the noticeboard. This is a document that specifies the day and time when the technician plans to take the meter readings. You will find it clearly visible near the front entrance.
With the up-to-date reading and the actual bills arriving on time and correct every two months, our cheap Natural Gas rates are the most convenient way to have all the natural gas your home needs, without any nasty surprises.
