Distributor security deposit: what it is, when it is paid and when it is recovered

Don't you know what a distributor security deposit is? Here at Endesa we will explain it to you, because we really want to help you understand your electricity and gas bills perfectly.

What is the Electricity Security Deposit?

The security deposit was a guarantee payment requested by electricity distribution companies in certain cases, such as when registering a new supply point or increasing the contracted power capacity.

What changes does Royal Decree 88/2026 introduce regarding the Security Deposit?

Royal Decree 88/2026 establishes that distribution companies will refund existing security deposits to the consumers who paid them.

Distribution companies will make this refund directly, or through the current retailer if they do not have the necessary information for this purpose. In the latter case, the retailer will pass the refund on to the consumer through the supply bill.

Refund of the Security Deposit on Endesa Energía bills

If the distribution company makes this refund through Endesa Energía, Endesa Energía will include it on the bill under the item “Distribution Company Security Deposit”.

The distribution company is responsible for identifying whether there is an amount to be refunded and the amount due.
