On Tuesday, 29 July, Endesa’s Madrid headquarters welcomed the men’s national team for the official presentation of the roster led by Sergio Scariolo. The 15 players called up by the national team coach took centre stage in a symbolic ceremony presented by Matías Prats and enlivened by the music of La Última Copa.
Throughout the event, #LaFamilia was surrounded by support and encouragement from Elisa Aguilar, president of the Spanish Basketball Federation (FEB); José Bogas, CEO of Endesa; and José Manuel Rodríguez Uribes, president of the Spanish supreme council for sports.
The stage, inspired by the Roman Empire as a nod to the legacy of Spanish basketball and the name of the Imperium Nostrum tour, saw all the players take part: Alberto Abalde, Santi Aldama, Darío Brizuela, Alberto Díaz, Willy Hernangómez, Juancho Hernangómez, Sergio de Larrea, Xabi López-Arostegui, Eli John Ndiaye, Joel Parra, Jaime Pradilla, Josep Puerto, Mario Saint-Supéry, Yankuba Sima, and Santi Yusta.
The coaching staff was also presented, led by team coach Sergio Scariolo, along with assistant coaches Salva Camps, Víctor García, Jorge Lorenzo, Fran Vázquez, and Rodrigo San Miguel. They were joined by Dr. Carlos Salas; fitness coaches Enrique Salinas and Javi H. Bello; physiotherapists Jordan Sospedra, José Antonio Fernández, and Tomás Richartz; performance specialist María Reina; and team managers Javier Cabrerizo and David Ortega. Txemi Urtasun and Ricardo Úriz will also be part of this summer’s staff as volunteer assistant coaches.
During the presentation of the men’s national team, FEB president Elisa Aguilar expressed her deep gratitude to Endesa for its continued support of Spanish basketball. Furthermore, she pointed out that this partnership goes beyond commercial ties and strengthens a shared project. Aguilar emphasised the start of a new cycle with a renewed team representing generational change and urged the players to compete with the same spirit, dedication, and values shown by the national team in 2024. In an emotional tribute, she publicly praised Sergio Scariolo, calling him ‘an example of commitment’ and ‘a key figure in the leadership that has taken Spain to the top of European basketball.’
José Bogas, CEO of Endesa, thanked the team for their presence and support: ‘Endesa is proud to welcome you once again this year to our headquarters, which is also your home.’ He recognised the players’ dedication, saying that they do this out of conviction, with commitment, giving up well-earned rest and time with their families. Bogas closed with heartfelt words for Sergio Scariolo: ‘Thank you, Sergio. It has been an honour to accompany you all these years.’ He then presented Scariolo with a commemorative basketball as a symbol of Endesa’s gratitude.
José Manuel Rodríguez Uribes also underlined: ‘This team has maintained fantastic continuity. We still have the same great national team, and Europa Imperium Nostrum represents us. We have every chance to keep doing things well, as we always do.’
Sergio Scariolo, the national team coach, shared his outlook for EuroBasket. Similarly, Willy Hernangómez, the team captain; Juancho Hernangómez, the second captain; and Santi Aldama spoke to express their confidence ahead of #LaFamilia next challenge.
Sergio Scariolo: ‘Our goal is to stay true to ourselves and to team play.’ He added that the new generation is ready, without pressure and with patience. On the human side of sports, he pointed out: ‘What endures are the people, not the results.’ And highlighted the value of teamwork: ‘The most beautiful thing is seeing a team function.’
Willy Hernangómez: ‘It is a dream to be captain alongside my brother in La Familia.’ He reaffirmed his commitment to mentoring the younger players: ‘I want to pass on the legacy of the veterans to the newcomers.’ Regarding the championship, he said that a EuroBasket is always ‘special and highly competitive.’ And summed up the group’s spirit:
‘La Familia is sacrifice, fun, and pride.’
Juancho Hernangómez: ‘It’s an honour to be part of La Familia.’ He also acknowledged his brother’s influence: ‘I keep learning from my brother; he has always paved the way for me.’
Santi Aldama: ‘We want to win gold, but the most important factor is the daily work,’ he said. He stressed the importance of the team’s legacy: ‘Representing La Familia is a responsibility passed down by the veterans.’ And he confessed his attachment to the national team: ‘What I miss most about the NBA are my teammates on the national team —it’s an honour to play for your country.’
The event also featured a live performance by the duo La Última Copa, winners of the first edition of Endesa Play, the emerging talent contest that brings together music and basketball. The ceremony ended with the traditional family photo alongside authorities, followed by Media Day, where journalists had the chance to interview the players and the coach.
