Endesa X, Endesa's energy services subsidiary, was awarded the tender made by the Pablo de Olavide University in Seville (UPO) which represents another step forwards in its energy transition process and a commitment to renewable and local energy generation, located in its own installations.
This will involve Endesa X installing a 2.68 MWp photovoltaic solar plant at the campus of the Pablo de Olavide University in Seville and that will contribute 32.7% of the total energy needs of this university campus, where nearly 13,000 students are trained each year.
This self-consumption installation will produce 4,073 MWh annually, which will prevent the emission into the atmosphere of 1,018 tons of CO2 per year, the equivalent of planting 6,100 trees. This will make the Pablo de Olavide University more efficient and sustainable.
For Juan Garrigosa, Manager of Public Administrations at Endesa X, "this type of self-consumption solutions offered by Endesa X are a very viable alternative for public entities to undertake their decarbonisation process without extra economic expenses and with a considerable result with regard to the reduction of their ecological footprint and their energy consumption invoices. To achieve this, Endesa X contributors all its knowledge of the energy sector, the latest technology and the support of a solid company that guarantees a successful result to support universities on the road towards sustainability".
The photovoltaic plant has an important environmental and economic dimension for the UPO and is part of its strategy for 2024. Antonio Gallardo, delegate of the rector for the Sustainable Campus, stressed that "it will mean a reduction of the carbon footprint for the campus and involves reducing greenhouse gas emissions into the atmosphere, contributing to the fight against climate change. It will also enable the University to make significant economic savings, since the energy from the photovoltaic plant will have a much lower cost than that currently existing in the market". The UPO recently obtained the 'Calculo' and 'Reduzco' seals, awarded by the Ministry of Ecological Transition, which recognise the effort made to register and reduce the carbon footprint.
To eliminate part of the ecological footprint of the Pablo de Olavide University, the investment planned for the installation of more than 3,432 photovoltaic modules that will be located in an area covering 23,970 m2 will be €2.7 million.
This project is possible due to a novel formula by which the educational entity does not have to provide any initial investment, with Endesa X assuming the cost of installing the photovoltaic plant for self-consumption and thus enabling the university to assign its resources to other initiatives.
In this type of contract, a fixed price associated with the energy produced by the self-consumption installations is established and Endesa X will be responsible for the operation, maintenance and exploitation of the installed infrastructure for the duration of the 15-year contract. This type of agreement will give the Pablo de Olavide University more certainty with regard to part of its energy costs for the duration of the contract.
From then on, the Pablo de Olavide University will fully manage the two installations and will continue working on the road to becoming increasingly sustainable.
This is the second agreement that Endesa X has reached with an Andalusian public university, following the installation of a self-consumption plant at the campus of the University of Jaén.
Energy supply, also with Endesa
In order to cover the rest of the energy that the University needs to undertake its activity, the UPO, through the REDEJA contract with the Regional Government of Andalusia, has an agreement with the Endesa group's retailer, Endesa Energía, involving the supply of almost 11 GWh per year.
