- The Enel Group, of which Endesa is a division, is undertaking 3 electrification projects through its subsidiary in Spain, Endesa X: In the province of Zaragoza, on the Italian island of Sardinia and in the capital of Chile.
- The project for Zaragoza will focus on actions to turn the province into an "Electrified Industrial District" although there will also be very competitive offers for products for residential customers and institutions, as well as Endesa's own employees in this province in Aragón.
- In collaboration with the Zaragoza City Council and a company called Avanza, Endesa X is already working on one of the most important public transport electrification projects in Spain.
Endesa X, Endesa's business line that provides services and solutions to accelerate innovation and promote energy transition, today presented to the Zaragoza City Council its flagship project to promote electrification in the province with a view to accelerating energy transition. In a meeting held at the Town Hall, the General Manager of Endesa X, Davide Ciciliato, the head of B2G in Endesa X, Juan Garrigosa, and the head of the flagship project in Zaragoza, Arancha Gállego, presented the mayor of Zaragoza, Jorge Azcón, with details of an ambitious plan that aims to show the advantages and benefits that electrifying their energy uses will mean for customers, with the adoption of more efficient technologies and consumption optimisation services that enable greater savings and make them more sustainable. This applies to both residential customers, companies and institutions and will make the province a global benchmark with regard to energy transition and decarbonisation.
This Endesa X electrification project in the province of Zaragoza will last until June 2023 and it involves providing all kinds of innovative products and services based on energy efficiency and savings.
During the presentation at the Town Hall, the Manager of Endesa X, Davide Ciciliato explained: "Our customers are already familiar with the energy transition process. For us, electricity is at the heart of this transition, as it introduces people, companies and institutions to a new paradigm, and provides them with new services and solutions with a high degree of technology, efficiency and accessibility. The electrification of demand involves an increase in the use of electricity by households and companies, and it enables a reduction in the use of technologies that emit CO2".
Electrification of Zaragoza
Endesa X chose Zaragoza to develop this commitment to electrification because here the economy based on industry which focusses on innovation and there is high potential for the decarbonisation of processes and transport. There is also high potential for the implementation of electric vehicles, both in the private and public sectors.
Consumption in the region is also largely thermal with potential for a reduction in the consumption of fossil fuels. It is one of the provinces where natural gas has the highest penetration. The potential for electrification in Zaragoza by 2030 is approximately 1.0 TWh, driven mainly by industry (0.5TWh) followed by the transport sector and the electrification of residential buildings.
"In Zaragoza we would like to demonstrate to our customers the economic advantages of electrification" explained Arancha Gállego, responsible for this project - "and for this we are introducing innovative products, unprecedented offers that combine energy with equipment, and new business models".
"The aim is to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050 and this requires the electrification of all sectors. Electrification is the most cost-effective and efficient way to decarbonise the final energy consumption of transport, buildings and industry. Renewable electricity obtained from renewable sources can replace the direct use of fossil fuels in those sectors that are the main cause of greenhouse gas emissions", Sr Gállego added.
Endesa X is already working, in collaboration with the Zaragoza City Council and the company awarded the Avanza service, on one of the most important public transport electrification projects in Spain, both with regard to the electrification of the fleet (there will be 68 new electric buses in addition to the 4 already in service), and to garage installations. The objective of this action is falls within the objective of turning the capital of Aragón into a sustainable and climate-neutral city with regard to urban mobility by 2030, two decades ahead of the commitments signed in Paris to reach "0 emissions" by 2050.
"Through Endesa X we are promoting efficient consumption and the electrification of demand with solutions ranging from self-generation to the replacement of technological solutions that use fossil fuels with more efficient electrical solutions. This will help us build a new open, digital and sustainable energy model" said Juan Garrigosa, head of B2G at Endesa X, who added "we will help the end customer with energy efficiency measures, as well as more sustainable, innovative processes that involve an increase in the use of clean technologies" and he concluded "society should realise that electrification is the most profitable and efficient way to decarbonise, so it is a key feature of energy transition and sustainable development".
Enel's flagship projects: Zaragoza, Sardinia and Santiago de Chile
The Enel Group, of which Endesa is a division, is undertaking 3 electrification projects worldwide through its subsidiary in Spain, Endesa X. This initiative in Zaragoza, focussing on the industrial sector and where new business models and solutions will be developed to achieve an "electrified and decarbonised industrial sector", is in addition to the Italian island of Sardinia, with a project focussing on actions with regard to decarbonisation, aimed at transforming the island into a "Green Island", based on
buildings and electric mobility; and in Santiago de Chile where efforts are aimed at making it a "sustainable city with high growth", where there is great potential with regard to electric mobility and green mining.
These flagship projects will search for solutions for all types of clients: B2B (companies and industries), B2C (residential customers) and B2G (Public Administration) segments, and there will also be emphasis on the internal electrification of the company itself. Endesa has 4 work centres in the province of Zaragoza, a fleet with more than 100 vehicles, 9 collaborating customer service and sales points and it is encouraging its 350 employees in Zaragoza to electrify their homes and vehicles.
The Enel Group is a leader in the energy transition that is taking place on a global scale and in the local context, through the transformation of use, consumption and business models. By 2030, Enel plans to invest €210,000 million worldwide to accelerate the achievement of the Group's electrification and decarbonisation targets, reaching a total renewable capacity of approximately 154 GW, tripling the current portfolio. Such significant growth will make it possible to replace fossil fuels for a number of uses: Buildings, industrial processes and transport, and this will accelerate energy transition, the electrification of the economy and energy independence.
