- Endesa's energy services subsidiary, Endesa X - the partner of TMB (Transportes Metropolitanos de Barcelona) in the challenge of electrification of its bus fleet - did not want to miss out on the opportunity to be one of the companies celebrating this anniversary.
- To celebrate tis centenary (1922–2022), TMB is organising a series of events throughout the year to highlight the past, present and future of public transport and its contribution to urban mobility and sustainability.
- Endesa X is committed to electric public transport as a key element in the transition towards the cities of the future. It contributes to this by providing an ecosystem of electrified and digitised urban infrastructure with innovative solutions.
Endesa X, Endesa's energy services subsidiary, will be one of the collaborating companies in the commemoration of the centenary of the Barcelona bus network (1922 – 2022) that TMB has recently presented. This collaboration is reinforcing the relationship between Endesa X and TMB, in which the company is working on TMB's electrification of Barcelona's bus network to achieve zero-emission urban mobility.
The first event in the celebrations that will take place throughout the year was the presentation of the commemorative book ‘Els autobusos de Barcelona: 100 anys fent xarxa (1922 – 2022)' (The busses of Barcelona celebrate their 100th birthday (1922 – 2022). Endesa X will play an active role in this programme, which is open to the public. TMB has set up the website with details of these events, historical material and other content relating to the anniversary.
The first two urban bus lines were inaugurated in Barcelona on 14 October 1922, with two complementary circular routes. Today there are 106 lines running every day over a network of about 840 kilometres in the metropolitan area of Barcelona. TMB's fleet includes 30 100% electric articulated buses, all with fast charging by pantograph. These serve the H16 line, which has been fully electric since the summer of 2021. These buses sometimes also run on lines H6, 7 and 33.
The next step will be electrification of two more busy lines, H12 and V15, in which Endesa X will support TMB. Endesa X is currently working with Dominion on the project to implement ultra-fast charging stations at the terminals for these lines
so that 100% electric articulated buses will be able to use them this year. A joint venture between these two companies has been awarded the maintenance of the charging infrastructure for these lines and line H16, which has been fully electrified since last summer. This charging system is explained on the following link: https://youtu.be/Lhu6b6V6pmY
The main objectives of Endesa X include the electrification of transport. This commitment is born from its conviction that electrification is essential to accelerate the path towards the decarbonisation of the economy and companies. Electrifying the sectors that generate the most emissions, which include transport, is essential for achieving this, in parallel with massive implementation of renewable energies. Electric public transport is key to being able to reconcile increasingly demanding environmental and efficiency requirements with the public's mobility needs. Improving air quality in urban environments, reducing CO₂ emissions to zero, is one of the Company's objectives to help institutions and market operators revolutionise the concept of urban transport by taking advantage of the transition to electric buses.
Endesa X offers public bodies and private companies a wide range of modular solutions for the transition and implementation of electric buses (or eBuses) in their fleets. There is a recent example in Zaragoza, where Endesa X has just announced the start of electrification work so that 68 new electric buses can be incorporated into the urban transport system. This work will include the installation of 76 charging stations.
In addition to promoting the electrification of transport, Endesa is contributing, through Endesa Energía S.A., to more efficient urban transport with TMB, through the supply of green energy for the Barcelona metro system. The company was recently awarded the contract to supply electricity to the underground networks of the Barcelona underground, Metro Bilbao SA, Metro Málaga SA and Sociedad Concesionaria Tramvia de Murcia in 2022 and 2023.
