A Surprise-Free Easter: Home Maintenance Guide
Easter is just around the corner: days of rest, family plans, or getaways. So that nothing ruins those moments, here is a quick guide to checking your home... and enjoying yourself without any nasty surprises.
A failing boiler, a tripped switch right in the middle of dinner, or an unexpected leak can turn your peace of mind into a real headache.
The good news is that many of these problems can be prevented with a little planning. Taking a few minutes to check your home before the bank holidays will allow you to enjoy them without any nasty surprises.
1. Gas and hot water: an essential safety measure
Easter means longer showers, the kitchen working flat out, and a house full of activity. When everything is running at once, any fault can ruin those moments. That is why taking a few minutes to check your installation is time well spent.
Quick boiler or water heater check:
Before the holidays begin, take a moment to check your hot water and heating system. It is not complicated, and it will give you great peace of mind knowing that everything is in working order. Failing to check them in time can lead to expensive breakdowns, gas leaks, or even running out of hot water just when you are away or have guests.
- Ignition and pressure: Turn on the boiler or water heater and check that it runs smoothly. Check the pressure of the heating circuit (if applicable), usually between 1 and 2 bar. If it constantly drops, there may be a small leak that is worth fixing before it becomes a bigger problem.
- Domestic hot water (DHW): Turn on the taps in different parts of the house. Does the water take a long time to heat up? Does the temperature fluctuate? It could be limescale build-up or a thermostat issue.
- Flame and noises: If you have a gas boiler, check the flame through the viewing window: it should be blue and steady. A yellow or orange flame is a sign of poor combustion, meaning you need a service from a professional. Also, listen out for any strange noises, such as banging or whistling.
- Stopcocks: Locate and check that the main water and gas stopcocks in your home work correctly and are not seized. In an emergency, having them to hand can make all the difference.
Leak detection: your nose could save you
An artificial odour is added to gas specifically so we can detect leaks quickly:
- Smell of gas: If you smell gas near the boiler or in the kitchen, do not turn the lights on or off, and do not touch any switches. Ventilate the room, turn off the main gas valve, and call a professional. If the smell is very strong, you must leave the property.
- Visual check: Using soapy water, run a sponge over the joints of the stopcocks and appliance connections. If bubbles form, there is a leak.
If you notice any of these signs, do not tamper with the installation, do not turn lights on or off, and ventilate the room. Leave the property and contact a professional.
For greater peace of mind, Endesa has the solution: Comprehensive Gas Maintenance: every year, qualified professionals check your gas installation and your boiler or water heater to ensure everything is working safely and to prevent these exact types of risks before they appear.
It is the safest way to guarantee that everything is working correctly and that your home is protected:
2. Small checks that prevent major hassles
Sometimes, it is the simplest details that make or break your home's comfort. Spending a few minutes checking certain elements can save you from inconveniences that affect your safety and your wallet during your holidays.
Taps and toilet cisterns
- Squeaks and drips: If your tap is dripping, fix it immediately. Changing the washer stops the annoying drip and saves water. Also, applying silicone grease to shower seals extends their life and improves performance.
- Toilet cistern: Open the lid and check that the inlet and outlet mechanisms are working properly. A cistern that doesn't stop running can waste hundreds of litres of water a day without you realising.
Checking your ‘star’ appliances
- Oven: Check the door seal. A damaged seal lets heat escape, increases cooking times, and drives up energy consumption. Clean it carefully and ensure the door closes properly.
- Refrigerator: Check that the door seals are airtight. Do the paper test: place a piece of paper between the door and the fridge body and close it. If it pulls out easily, the seal isn't tight enough, and the motor will have to work overtime.
Backup lighting
Check torches, candles, and batteries just in case there is a power cut. It is also a good idea to have a fully charged portable power bank for your phone: small details that can save the day.
When these problems appear, waiting doesn't solve them: it usually makes the problem worse and increases the repair cost.
If you want to be covered against any electrical or appliance breakdown, Endesa offers 360 Plus Protection, which provides assistance for the most common domestic breakdowns (electrical, plumbing, appliances, etc.), so you can enjoy your holidays with complete peace of mind and have a safe home:
