Endesa Foundation gives awards to Educational Eco-innovation 2017 - 2018

Throughout these two editions, 41,186 students have participated in these awards.
  • The 2nd edition of the Educational Eco-innovation Awards closed the call for entries with more than 300 candidacies registered at the national level, of which 194 were accepted, which entails an increase in participation of some 35% with regard to the last edition.
  • Throughout these two editions, 41,186 students have participated in these awards and have presented 337 projects with ideas and solutions for recycling, and conservation of nature and fauna.

The Endesa Foundation has given the Educational Eco-innovation Awards jointly with the European Society and Education Foundation at Endesa's headquarters. The objective of these awards is to identify innovative attitudes, committed to the conservation of nature and the environment among the youngest.

The event has had a broad representation from the centres participating in this edition, with more than 120 invitees belonging to organisations from the educational and environmental sector, with the presence of members of the Panel and the foundations promoting this initiative, the General Director of the Endesa Foundation, Carlos Gómez-Múgica, the Communication Director of Endesa, Alberto Fernández Torres, the Projects Director of the Endesa Foundation, Begoña Muñoz de Verger, the Chairman of Society and Education, Miguel Ángel Sancho, and as a special invitee in this edition, with the Founder and Chairman of the sustainable fashion firm, Ecoalf, Javier Goyeneche.

The 7 award-winning projects of students from Secondary School, High School Graduates and Post-Secondary Vocational Training, belonging to educational centres of the communities of Navarra, Andalusia, Asturias, Madrid and the Canary Islands, have today submitted their proposals and analyses regarding an environmental problem detected in their surroundings. The event has assisted more than 100 students and a score of teachers that have held a symposium with the entrepreneur and businessman, Javier Goyeneche, regarding the importance of the individual responsibility of each citizen with regard to the environment and the footprint that we leave on it.

Through this initiative, Begoña Muñoz de Verger, Projects Director of the Endesa Foundation, has indicated that ‘these awards intend to showcase and disseminate good practices that teachers, students and the centres as a whole carry out in terms of environmental responsibility and commitment’.

In turn, Miguel Ángel Sancho, Chairman of Society and Education, a foundation that is a strategic member of the Endesa Foundation on this project, has congratulated the organisations from this new edition, the finalists and the winners, and has highlighted the commitment of both institutions to the promotion of an ecological culture which, driven by young people, ‘is consolidated once more in educational action, giving meaning to human beings’ relationships with nature, not only deepening their understanding, but helping to modify their attitudes and behaviours towards it’.

Categories:

The awards designed to involve all educational cycles have 3 categories and 3 levels: level A for first cycle Secondary School students (1st and 2nd ESO), level B for second cycle Secondary School students (3rd and 4th ESO) and level C for High School Graduates and Post-Secondary Vocational Training students.

In the 1st category, ‘What is nature to you?’, award-winning projects have resulted that describe an environmental problem in depth demonstrating that nature is understood and appreciated. The winners have been: the Miravalles de Navarra School with its analysis on the problem of processionary caterpillar pest, the IES centre Gustavo Adolfo Bécquer with the preparation of a study on pasture land and its historic and ecological value, and finally, the Sagrado Corazón School, which has created an ‘Erasing Footprints’ awareness campaign to reduce the centre's ecological footprint.

In the 2nd category, ‘My Creative Solution to an Environmental Problem’, the centres that have presented a creative innovative solution to an ecological or environmental problem have been: the Fomento Peñamayor School with its awareness campaign and used mobile phone collection ‘Movilízate!’, the Humanitas Bilingual School Tres Cantos with the design of a brochure to reduce the environmental impact of a reservoir and the Luis Cobiella Cuevas centre with ‘Pass on Your Mobile Phone 2.0’ initiative, which provides a solution to the tremendous problem of mobile phones that we discard daily.

And in the 3rd category, ‘How Will You Improve Your Environment?’, the award has gone to bringing an end to the community project of the Ave María Casa Madre de Granada centre of reintroducing the Spanish Ringed Newt amphibian in the Darro River Valley in the Province of Granada. Thanks to the involvement of the 650 students of this centre, their families and neighbours, these young people have performed intense field work, which includes the creation of watering points, as well as workshops, work, projections, debates and visits to achieve the survival of this species. This project is part of a work pathway that will last 10 years.
