PIANO CITY MADRID is an international macro festival featuring the piano that, on the occasion of European Music Day, over three days (17, 18 and 19 June) consists of 60 free concerts distributed throughout the city, both outdoors and in some of the most representative public areas Madrid.
This first edition of PIANO CITY MADRID was organised by TopArtEspaña, with the institutional collaboration of the Culture, Tourism and Sport Area of the Madrid City Council, the sponsorship of Endesa and the artistic assessment of the pianist Chano Domínguez from Cádiz.
The piano is the king of the festival. The technical sponsors for the event are the prestigious brands Kawai, Yamaha and Bösendorfer whose instruments will be played by the artists who will fill the city with music.
There is also collaboration from Generali España, the Teatro Real, the Museo Nacional del Prado, the
Real Conservatorio Superior de Música de Atocha and the Escuela Superior de Música Reina
Sofia and the Italian Institute of Culture. To these we should add the Musical Arts School, the Kaway Shigeru Centre and the Ateneo de Madrid that will host a cycle of guest concerts, parallel to those concerts organised by the above-mentioned institutions.
Piano City Madrid collaborated with the streaming and digital download platform Qobuz by preparing different playlists dedicated to some of the artists playing at the festival.
The event also has a media partner of reference, Radio Clásica - Radio Nacional de España.
The coordination of technical production for the first edition of Piano City Madrid will be undertaken by Esound Music Events, based in Valencia. Image and digital communication for Piano City Madrid were the responsibility of the creative company Aupa!
PIANO CITY MADRID was created as a result of similar projects that have been held in Europe since 2010. It all started in Berlin, starting from an idea by the German musician Andreas Kern and it was so successful that other European cities were added to the initiative, these included Naples, Palermo, Novi Sad, and especially Milan, which has now been celebrating its own Piano City in style for 10 years.
PIANO CITY MADRID will take place for the first time in Spain. Between 17 and 19 June, Madrid will become the international capital for the piano, with an intensive, transversal popular macro festival, which aims to bring together different audiences by adopting a multidisciplinary, festive and social approach. The project was created with the illusion of promoting culture and taking it out into the street, making it accessible to everyone.
It will be held in some of the most iconic locations in the city, where there will be 60 simultaneous free concerts of classical, jazz, jazz-flamenco music and there will also be room for contemporary and electronic music.
The pianos will be located in different places in the city: Some stages will be unprecedented with regard to music but extremely iconic in the city, these include the Spiral Madrid Rio Bridge (PIANO CITY CENTRE – ENDESA STAGE), the Arganzuela Greenhouse, the History Museum of Madrid and the Parque Tierno Galván Auditorium. It will also be present in different centres managed by the Culture Area of the City Council including the auditoriums of Condeduque, CentroCentro and Matadero Madrid, as well as the Teatro Real.
Some of the most original projects will be the Silent Concerts that will take place in the Madrid Museum of History: An unprecedented experience for the public, with an acoustic piano that does not emit sounds, but can be played and listened to only with headphones.
María Lacasa, Brand and Sponsorship Manager for Endesa, pointed out that "Piano City Madrid represents everything we want from cultural sponsorship, to bring music to everyone, everywhere. That universality of the project was the reason for our commitment. We are delighted to support this initiative through the Endesa Stage on the Spiral Bridge over Madrid Rio."
Carmelo Di Gennaro, Chief Executive Officer of TopArtEspaña, declared that "PIANO CITY MADRID is open to everyone. We are asking all those who live in Madrid and all the people who visit the city during those dates to come and enjoy this live music, the wonderful sound of the piano and the mastery of the selected musicians in some of the most magical venues in Madrid"
The project also aims to revitalise two specific groups, that of emerging musicians and also that of live event workers who were very affected during the pandemic with the cancellation of concerts and festivals.
