Enel Green Power España builds a new wind farm in Zaragoza

  • The Campoliva II plant will have 39.38 MW of power, and, when it comes into operation at the end of 2019, it will be able to generate 119 GWh a year.
  • Investment will stand at 39 million euro.

Endesa, through its renewable energy subsidiary Enel Green Power España (EGPE), has begun the construction of a new wind farm, Campoliva II, with a capacity of 39.38 MW in the town of Villamayor de Gállego in the province of Zaragoza. The investment is 39 million euro and it will come into operation by the end of this year.

José Bogas, CEO of Endesa said that "with this project we are taking another step forward in our green energy objectives and reinforcing our commitment to further strengthen the renewable generation mix in Spain. Endesa is fully committed to the use of renewable energy sources in Spain, actively promoting innovation and sustainability for the benefit of local communities and the country as a whole".

The new wind farm will come into operation by the end of 2019 and, when it is operational, it will have the capacity to generate some 119 GWh a year, which will prevent the annual emission of 79,000 tonnes of CO 2 into the atmosphere. It will consist of 15 2.6 MW unit power wind turbines.

Campoliva II joins 10 other wind farms in Aragon, which are part of the 540 MW that EGPE was awarded at the auctions organised by the Spanish government in May 2017. The wind farms will be operational by the end of 2019. Specifically, six of them are located in the province of Teruel: Muniesa, Farlán, San Pedro de Alarcón, Allueva, Sierra Pelarda and Sierra Costera I and five in the province of Zaragoza: Campoliva I, El Campo, Santo Domingo de Luna, Loma Gorda and Campoliva II. When they come into operation, they will have a generation capacity of about 1200 GWh a year, which will prevent the annual emission of 796,000 tonnes of CO 2 into the atmosphere, and will involve a 430-million euro investment. The remaining 171 MW of wind power awarded in the auctions will be located in Andalusia, Castilla y León, Castilla-La Mancha and Galicia.

EGPE will use various innovative tools and techniques for the construction of its wind farms, such as drones for the topographical surveying, smart tracking of the turbine components, advanced digital platforms and software solutions to remotely monitor and support the plants' activities and commissioning. These tools and solutions will enable faster, more accurate and reliable compilation of data during site activities, which enhances the overall quality of construction and facilitates communication between teams inside and outside the construction vicinity.

The construction of these projects is based on Enel Green Power's "Sustainable Construction Site" model, which includes the installation of photovoltaic solar panels at each site to cover part of their energy needs. Furthermore, water saving measures will be implemented by means of installing water deposits and rain water collection systems; once construction work has completed, both photovoltaic panels and water saving equipment will be donated to municipalities where projects are located for their public use.

EGPE has begun the construction of 339 MW of solar origin production capacity in the Government's third auction, held in July 2017, in Extremadura and Murcia.

The construction of wind (540 MW) and solar (339 MW) power installations, assigned in the last two auctions, will entail investment of more than 800 million euro up to 2020. This additional capacity of 879 MW entails a 52.4% increase in EGPE's current renewable energies park.

Endesa currently manages over 6526 MW of renewable capacity in Spain. Of this figure, 4710 MW are from conventional hydroelectric generation. The rest, over 1816 MW, are managed via EGPE and come from wind power (1750 MW), mini-hydroelectric power (52 MW) and other sources of renewable energy (14 MW).

Enel Green Power, the global renewable energy business line of the Enel Group, of which Endesa is part, is dedicated to the development and operation of renewables worldwide, with a presence in Europe, America, Asia, Africa and Oceania. Enel Green Power is a global leader in the green energy sector, with a managed capacity of around 43 GW in a generation combination that includes wind, solar, geothermal and hydroelectric and is at the forefront of the integration of innovative technologies in renewable power plants.
