- The study, which is intended to assess the quality of information on Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR), uses 520 non-financial indicators to analyse the quality of the information reported by IBEX 35 companies in the areas of good governance, corruption, taxation, human rights, labour rights, the environment, and customers and consumers.
- Endesa came first with a score of 53.49 points compared to the average of 33.62 points of all the companies that make up the IBEX-35.
- The CSR Observatory was created in 2004 by several organisations already working independently in the study and promotion of this area.
Of all the large Spanish listed companies, Endesa is the one which reports the best non-financial information through its annual reports. This is apparent from the latest study by the Spanish CSR Observatory, ‘Corporate social responsibility in the annual reports of the IBEX 35’ , in which the company obtained the best score in the ranking, with 53.49 points, compared to the average of 33.6 scored by the companies on the index.
In addition to leading the global ranking, Endesa is among the best companies in 6 of the 7 dimensions: Corruption (7th), Responsible Taxation (4th), Environment (3rd), Labour Rights (leader) and Customers (6th). The company is also an outstanding leader in the area of Human Rights.
The study, which has been published since 2004, analyses 520 non-financial indicators, including 194 that correspond specifically to the requirements set forth in Law 11/2018 on non-financial information and diversity. The purpose of this is to evaluate the quality of the information on aspects of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) provided by Ibex-35 companies in documentation and in public and accessible reports. It is also prepared with the aim of assessing the degree to which CSR reports are valid tools for the generated information to be useful for the management and internal control of the companies themselves.
In this edition of the report, several Endesa good practices stand out, among which we can mention:
- Corruption: Endesa is one of 20 companies on the Ibex35 that expressly prohibit contributions to political parties and one of 9 that present information, albeit in a generic way, on specific corruption risks.
- Good Governance: Endesa is the only company that reports that the Audit Committee undertakes to make an annual assessment of everything related to non-financial risks. In addition, in the area of transparency, Endesa has been registered on the EU's Transparency Register since 2011.
- Responsible Taxation: Endesa adjusts its tax information to international frameworks such as the list made by the Tax Justice Network international organisation.
- Environment: Endesa has a specific policy on water use, which identifies risks and is committed to management at the product or production process level. It also has preventive and corrective action plans for the identified risks. Furthermore, the report highlights that Endesa is committed to promoting the transition to a circular economy through its adherence to the Spanish Ministry of Ecological Transition’s Pact for a Circular Economy.
- Human Rights: the report highlights numerous initiatives which are carried out by only a few companies other than Endesa: the company identifies the main impacts detected in the field of Human Rights, it has a formal public Human Rights policy approved by the Board of Directors, developed with external advice, it identifies the area responsible for the implementation of due diligence in Human Rights, it transfers the commitment to the supply chain and is one of 3 companies with specific mechanisms for redress.
- Labour Rights: Endesa gives a description of the workers, activities and work centres covered by the health and safety system. Endesa is among 16 companies that report on policies and mechanisms to avoid discrimination against its staff.
- Customers: while 25 companies explicitly declare a commitment to the protection of consumers and customers, only 15 companies go a step further and report on evaluations of impacts on the health and safety of products and/or services. Endesa indicates that all products and services delivered to customers comply with current regulations, including those related to health, and in its e-report it reports on measures to protect consumers in matters of health and safety. Only 9 companies provide the percentage of products and services for which impacts on health and safety are evaluated, and one of these is Endesa.
Another good practice related to customers is that Endesa identifies customers who are in a situation of energy poverty; through the web it provides extensive information on the social rate. In the Sustainability Report, it provides extensive information on the agreements signed with local/autonomous administrations and third sector entities so that customers who are in a situation of energy poverty do not suffer power cuts.
CSR Observatory
The CSR Observatory was created in 2004 by several organisations already working independently in the study and promotion of this area. It is made up of organisations representing civil society, characterised by the plurality and diversity of the organisations that make it up and which have united around this association under a common denominator, CSR.
The CSR Observatory is currently made up of the Alliance for Solidarity, Anesvad, Ayuda en Acción, Cáritas, CCOO, Spanish Red Cross, Economists Without Borders, Entreculturas, Fundadeps, Manos Unidas, Oxfam Intermón, USO and ONGAWA.
