Endesa builds the largest self-supply photovoltaic project in the hotel sector in Spain

Sa Coma photovoltaic farm, in Sant Llorenç del Cardassar (Mallorca).
  • The project is a milestone for both Protur Hotels and Endesa, as it is the self-supply project with the highest power in the hotel sector in Spain and one of the largest in Europe.
  • In environmental terms, it represents a reduction in emissions of 1,648 tons of CO2/year, equivalent to planting 103,824 trees/year.
  • Of the plant’s total production, 4,978,478 kWh/year, 70% will be used for self-supply.
  • Self-supply makes up the equivalent of 44% of current consumption in the 5 Protur Hotels connected to the photovoltaic plant, saving almost €250,000/year.

Endesa, through its subsidiary Endesa X, is building for Protur Hotels, in the town of Sa Coma, in the municipality of Sant Llorenç del Cardassar (Mallorca), the largest photovoltaic project for private self-supply in the hotel sector in Spain with a total power of 2.8 MWp and a production of 4,978,478 kWh/year.

Today, a visit to the new facilities was made by Juan Pedro Yllanes, Vice President and Minister of Energy Transition and Productive Sectors of the Government of the Balearic Islands, Joan Riera, head of energy efficiency at Protur Hotels, and Martí Ribas, the general director of Endesa in the Balearic Islands.

The project undertaken by Endesa X is carried out on a turnkey basis, including calculation, design, manufacture, supply, transportation, insurance, installation and start-up of the plant. A plant composed of 8,100 photovoltaic modules installed on an area of 38,000 m2.

In order to meet Protur Hotels’ requirements and needs, Endesa X proposed the construction of this park in an area beside the estate where five of its 18 hotels are located.

With this project, Protur Hotels meets one of the main objectives of its strategic environmental plan: that 100% of its hotels run on renewable energy. In addition to photovoltaic energy, the rest of the buildings in the chain have other renewable sources such as geothermal, biomass, and solar thermal, among others.

The hotels Protur Vista Badia, Protur Sa Coma Playa, Protur Safari Park, Protur Badia Park, Protur Biomar Gran Hotel & SPA and the Biomar Spa will benefit from the facility's 2.8MWp self-supply, with an energy source that improves the energy efficiency and reduces the environmental impact of its activity, with Endesa taking care of the entire process.

Of the plant’s total production, 4,978,478 kWh/year, 70% will be used for self-supply by the 5 hotels and the Protur Hotels Spa (Vista Badia, Sa Coma Playa, Safari Park, Badia Park and Biomar & SPA), with a surplus of 30% that will be channelled into the distribution network.

All the self-supplied production represents a 44% reduction in current grid consumption. In economic terms, this lesser dependence on the grid represents a saving of almost €250,000/year for Protur Hotels.

In environmental terms, it represents a reduction in emissions of 1,648 tons of CO2/year, equivalent to planting 103,824 trees/year.

The project is a milestone for both Protur Hotels and Endesa, as it is the self-supply project with the highest power in the hotel sector in Spain. With Endesa’s help, the Hotel Chain makes a qualitative leap and joins the energy revolution.

Self-supply becomes part of Protur's energy source: a clean, sustainable, inexhaustible energy that maintains the highest quality of its services without impacting on the environment. An economic saving for customers. An environmental improvement for the planet.

Decarbonisation of the islands

Endesa is working to lead the ecological transition and implement a fully decarbonised energy system by 2040, a decade ahead of the emission reduction targets set by the European Union and Spain for 2050. This is one of the main conclusions of the study “Non-Peninsular Territories 100% Decarbonised by 2040: the vanguard of the energy transition in Spain”, drawn up by Monitor Deloitte in collaboration with Endesa. This study analyses the characteristics of the non-peninsular territories and provides a set of solutions to decarbonise these regions.

To achieve a completely decarbonised energy system, the study analyses the particularities of the island territories and proposes a set of actions in different areas: transport, homes, services and electricity generation.

Self-supply, along with other energy efficiency initiatives, is one of the key points in tackling decarbonisation in the household and service sector. Through Endesa X, Endesa's new subsidiary, customers are provided with photovoltaic solar technology installations fully adapted to their needs.
