Endesa and the Council of Gran Canaria have signed an agreement for the supply of 100% green power to the island corporation during 2017, extendable for one year, at a cost of 5,537,728 €/year. In this way, the buildings, installations and equipment dependent on the Island Council and with contract power ratings of over 10 kilowatts (kW) will receive power from renewable sources and high-efficiency cogeneration in its entirety.
In total, Endesa will supply slightly over 36 GWh [gigawatts/hour] of 100% green energy during 2017 to 268 supply points dependent on the island corporation, such as the headquarters of the Council itself, the Sole Island Transport Authority, the Atlantic Centre of Modern Art, the Canary Islands Trade Fair Institution, the Tourist Board and the Insular Sports Institute, as well as foundations such as that of Juan Negrín, of the Performing Arts and Music and the Philharmonic Orchestra among others; the Medical and Social Care Institute and the “Valora” section of the Tax Administration Department. Furthermore, thanks to this agreement, Endesa will also process the certification of the entirety of the consumption during 2017 in the System of Guarantee of Origin issued by the National Commission on Financial Markets and Competition (CNMC).
According to the Company’s estimates, by means of this agreement the Gran Canaria Council will register a saving of over 375,000 Euros on its electricity bill next year.
The renewable origin of the electricity to be supplied is confirmed by certificates of guarantee of origin, as stipulated in Ministerial Order ITC/1522/2007, of 24th May, wherein the regulation of the guarantee of origin of electricity from renewable power sources and high-efficiency cogeneration is established.
The supply of power from renewable sources is one of the cornerstones of Endesa’s commitment to the environment and energy efficiency, and is in line with the Company’s sustainability policy, as exemplified by Endesa’s presence in the main sustainability and responsible investment indices, such as the Dow Jones Sustainability Index, Euronext Vigeo, STOXX Global ESG Leaders, ECPI Global Carbon Equity Index and the prestigious Carbon Disclosure Project.
