- Endesa has gained customers among families, both for electricity and natural gas.
- Endesa leads the large electricity consumers segment, with a 25% share.
- In the residential segment, since January, Endesa is the retailer that took on the largest number of customers, both for electricity and natural gas.
Endesa continues to increase its market share in Portugal. According to data from the latest monthly newsletter from the Energy Services Regulatory Entity (ERSE) on the Liberalised Electricity Market, Endesa leads the business segment (B2B) in Portugal. This leadership position was reached at the end of July by adding together the market shares for all categories: Large Consumers, Industrial Consumers and Small Businesses.
According to Miguel Mendes, B2B Director of Endesa Portugal, “in the electricity sector, as is the case in Spain, the aim is to consolidate our position as the natural leader of the Portuguese business market. At this time, our share of the business segment is approximately 22.4%. Our aim is to increase the number of customers in all segments, with a special focus on the lower consumption segment and the public sector. In natural gas retailing, Endesa is also present in the business sector (B2B) with a 12.8% share of Large Customers and the goal of remaining in second place in the Portuguese natural gas market."
The same data from the Portuguese regulatory body reveal that, in the residential segment, Endesa is the retailer with the largest number of customers captured since January, both for electricity and natural gas. For Inés Roque, B2C Director of Endesa Portugal, “the success and development of the retailer in Portugal is very significant. In the residential segment, Endesa is the company that has captured the greatest number of customers, while other retailers, such as Iberdrola and EDP, have lost their customer base. We will shortly reach 500,000 customers. Our strategy is based on clarity, transparency, digitalisation and innovation.”
In addition, according to the latest ERSE monthly report on the Liberalised Electricity Market, the total number of electricity consumers in Portugal grew by 2.4% in July compared to the same month in 2019 and reached 5.3 million customers. This was also 12,100 more than in June.
An increase also in natural gas
In natural gas, according to the regulator, Endesa occupies second place by consumption, with 12% (an increase in market share of 0.1 percentage points compared to June).
In the large natural gas consumers segment, Endesa also recorded a 0.2 point increase (12.8%) in market share, in second position.
Success in renewables
In addition to this growth in market shares, Endesa has also resumed its commitment in Portugal to the production of electricity from renewable energy sources, with a special focus on solar power. Recently, Endesa Generación Portugal - a subsidiary of Endesa, part of the Enel Group - was awarded a lot of 99 MW of solar power in the second auction of renewable energies sponsored by the Portuguese government. The plant, located in the Algarve, will be designed, built and operated by the Enel Group's renewables company, Enel Green Power, and will be the Group's first renewable project with storage on the Iberian Peninsula. The project, which is expected to come into operation in 2024, will be located in the Algarve region and its construction will involve an investment of approximately 90 million euros.
