How to protect yourself from sudden increases in the price of electricity
We have already spoken at some point about why the price of electricity goes up. But is there a way to avoid those sudden hikes on our electricity bill?
Weather conditions or other unforeseen factors can cause sudden, marked increases in the price of electricity. What options do we have to avoid it having an impact on our bank balance?
Do cold snaps make the price of our electricity bill go up?
Whenever there is a cold snap, we hear messages on the news about how the price of electricity has reached all-time highs. The beginning of 2021 is a good example of this.
They sometimes give us prices that are so astronomical that they make us worry that we won’t be able to pay our next electricity bill.
But it then turns out that there are people that don’t see a rise in the price of their electricity during cold spells of weather and other people, on the other hand, that notice a sharp hike in their bill.
Does the price we pay for electricity actually go up in winter?
The key is whether we are in the free market or in the regulated market. In the following content we will explain everything you need to know about the free and regulated market. But this is the summary:
- If you are in the regulated market, the price of the electricity you use will be subject to fluctuations due to the weather or global instability.
- If you are in the free market, with Endesa for instance, you are protected and you will pay what is stated in your contract.
The variable rate means that the higher the demand for energy, as is the case in winter, the higher the price we pay for electricity.
Regardless of the weather conditions or the news insisting that electricity prices have gone up, if we are with Endesa, these variations won’t affect us.
Variations in weather can take place at any time of the year, although they are more common when peak hot or cold conditions are reached.
If you have an Endesa tariff, these issues will not affect the price of each kWh that you use.
The best tariff to avoid sudden hikes
The best tariff to protect yourself from uncertainty is not actually a tariff. It is so much more.
Única from Endesa makes sure that you will pay the same every month no matter what you use and no matter what the weather.
We calculate a fee based on your usage history and you can use all the energy that you need (electricity and/or gas):

What other weather changes suddenly affect the price of electricity?
We shouldn’t just focus on the rising peaks in the coldest or hottest months of the year. There are other meteorological factors that can considerably affect the cost of energy all of a sudden.
One of them is the lack of wind and, although in theory it seems contradictory, too much wind is harmful.
This is because a lot of the energy produced in our country, and which is very important at Endesa comes from renewable energies such as wind power.
Wind generators need minimal wind power in order to work. However, with very high gusts of wind they need to be halted to avoid structural damage or power surges.
Therefore, sudden changes in wind conditions reduce energy production causing demand to exceed the supply of available energy.
