I’m going independent: what I do about electricity?
When you make the decision to leave the family home and to go and live on your own, doubts start to crop up. One of them might be how to go about contracting electricity. Don’t worry, it’s a simple process, and we’ll tell you how to do it.
To begin with, and to make sure that you only pay for what corresponds to you, on the first day in your new home it’s a good idea to take note of the reading on the meter.
This advice also applies to the gas, the water and any other supplies – get there and take note of the consumption prior to your arrival.
Your freedom of choice is sacred
It’s very important that you know that you have the right to choose your electricity company freely. Whether you’ve bought the house or rented it, this right corresponds to all consumers. It’s equally legitimate to change companies or continue with the one that’s already contracted.
- What you can choose: the company that will collect for your bills, that is, the energy marketing company.
- What you can’t choose: the company in charge of sending power to your home, that is, the distribution company. You can’t choose this one because this depends on the area where you live.
3 possible situations
When you arrive at a new house, the case may be that:
- The electricity is already connected and you think the contract power is suitable: if this is the case, and you want to continue as a customer of the same marketing company, you’ll only have to change the contract holder. This procedure is free of charge.
- The electricity is already connected, but you think the power is too high or too low: you’ll have to change the contract power. This procedure does cost you money.
- The electrical installation isn’t connected to the grid: you’ll have to sign on. If your supply point hasn’t been used for over three years, this procedure will cost you money (LINK). The activation contract is processed by the marketing company, but it’s the distribution company that installs the meter and activates the supply. This is why you’ll pay the distribution company for this procedure in your first bill. Obviously, the cost will depend on the consumption, the current power and the previous power, and also on the time the service has been deactivated (or if it’s a new activation).

Contracting and choosing the rate
The procedures for activating the electricity supply or changing the contract holder are very simple if you’re an Endesa customer. Not only do we guide you step by step, but we also recommend the best rate and the power you can engage according to your requirements.
To make things quicker, you can make the contract online. If it’s a question of changing the contract holder, we explain how to do it here.
To find the power that’s most suited to your requirements, you can use Endesa’s power calculator. When you choose the rate, remember that power is marketed on the ‘free market’, with countless rates, and the ‘regulated market’, where the consumer can only choose the Voluntary Price for the Small Consumer (VPSC).
When the process is complete, we’ll send you an e-mail to confirm receipt of your application. This message will give you access to your Customer Area so you can view the current status of the contracting process. In case you haven’t completed your registration, you can do it at any time.
