A Robot vacuum cleaner is a domestic appliance that has become very popular in recent decades in many Spanish homes. They are easy to use, functional, small and save a lot of work in daily tasks.
What is a robot vacuum cleaner?
It is a small domestic appliance that sucks dirt from the floor and moves around autonomously in a certain area. There are some models that even incorporate the scrubbing function.
To move about it uses a sensor system, which detects obstacles and enables the generation of a mapping of the surface. Some models incorporate shock sensors or markers that indicate to the robot where it should not pass: This will prevent it from accessing places in the house that you do not want to vacuum clean at that time or from sliding into places where it could be damaged, such as stairs, although there are already models capable of detecting a vacuum and avoiding it.
On the market there are also models with Wi-Fi, which will help you manage the robot vacuum cleaner through an app. Some are even compatible with a voice assistant.
It is designed to be round and flat, so it can get under the furniture and used to thoroughly clean corners. Inside there are brushes and a suction system that drag and suck dirt from the floor. The dust is stored in a container, which has to be emptied regularly. It is also important to maintain other parts of the robot vacuum cleaner, such as the brushes so that they do not get blocked and stop working properly.
When they need to be charged, these devices usually have a base to which they return automatically when their work is finished they or need to be recharged. Other models come without a charging cradle and can be plugged with a charging cable into the mains.
How much energy does a robot vacuum cleaner use?
To know how much energy a robot vacuum cleaner uses, you have to know its technical specifications, depending on the model. Battery life (how long it can work before the battery runs out), voltage, and electrical charge (measured in milliamp hours and equals how much power the battery can deliver in an hour).
Charging your robot to 100% can involve a consumption of 0.1 kWh. However, the surface area allocated for cleaning and how often you use it will determine how much energy is used and how often you will have to charge it.
For example, if it has a battery life of 1.5 hours and you run it half an hour a day, the daily energy expenditure will be 0.003 kWh, amounting to a consumption of 1 kWh per month.
We can make a comparison standard vacuum cleaners: If you use a 700 W vacuum cleaner daily for the same time (half an hour), there will be a consumption of 0.35 kWh. This would amount to a monthly consumption of 10.5 kWh, almost 10 times more than using a robot vacuum cleaner, although you should bear in mind that the most standard vacuum cleaners usually have greater suction power and when used manually they work better in the dirtiest areas and pass over those that are already clean, optimising cleaning and reducing times.
Tips on how to use your robot vacuum cleaner efficiently
- Take advantage of the hours when energy is cheaper to charge your robot vacuum cleaner. For this, we especially recommend time discrimination tariffs: Off-peak hours, when the price per kWh is lower, are the most recommended for charging.
- If your vacuum cleaner has an ECO programme, you should prioritise this feature: Your robot vacuum cleaner may take longer to clean the assigned surface, but it will use less energy to do it.
- Keep your robot in the best condition, following the manufacturer's instructions.
What are the advantages of a robot vacuum cleaner?
Some of the main advantages of robot vacuum cleaners are the following:
- They save you work: You do not have to spend your time and sweeping or using a standard vacuum cleaner. You can also assign it a different area every day so your house will always remain in good condition.
- It vacuums in inaccessible places: It is designed to go under furniture, around and into corners that are difficult to access for other cleaning devices such as brushes and dusters.
- It uses a reduced amount of energy: As we have seen, compared to standard vacuum cleaners it consumes about 10 times less.
- They are easy to store: Because they are small, they fit in small places and do not take up much space.
- They can be programmed: Most models can be activated whenever you want, so they can work and vacuum when no one is at home minimising discomfort.
- They can be charged at times when energy is cheaper: As we pointed out above, you can programme your charge to be made in off-peak hours (if you have a time discrimination tariff).
- They are easy to transport: Because of their weight and volume, they can be easily transported if you want to vacuum somewhere else (a second home, a business premises, etc.).
- They are safe: They are designed so that they do not represent risks for children or animals.
To summarise, technologies to care for and clean your home are advance rapidly, so incorporating them into your daily life is a comfortable and easy solution that saves time and, in the long run saves money.
