What is the Renewal Plan for natural gas boilers?

The administrations have different measures in place to make it easier to replace old natural gas boilers with condensing boilers. This aid is channelled through the Autonomous Communities and is given under the title of Renewal Plan.

The Institute for Diversification and Saving Energy (IDEA in Spanish), in its Report on Residential Consumption, pointed out that in Spain there are 7,600,000 homes with traditional gas or diesel oil boilers, compared to 216,000 homes that now have condensing systems.

Why should you change your gas or diesel oil boiler?

There are three essential reasons to be able to benefit from the 2022 Renewal Plan to replace an old boiler with a condensing boiler: efficiency, sustainability and la Safety. The IDAE recommends changing the boiler every 15 years.

Condensing boilers save between 15% and 20% on the supply of hot water at 80°C, and between 20% and 30% at 60°C. In buildings with traditional radiator heating, energy savings can exceed 25%. Furthermore, with the passage of time, the performance of traditional boilers reduces and they become increasingly inefficient. With current gas prices rising as a result of the War in Ukraine, this is an ideal opportunity to join this plan and be able to save on your bill.

It is calculated that 12% of CO2 emissions in Spain correspond to traditional boilers. Replacing these old boilers with condensing boilers will mean significantly reducing polluting emissions, helping to curb Climate Change and meeting the commitments acquired by Spain within the European Union.

It should be taken into account that once traditional boilers no longer pass the corresponding inspections and investment is not made in maintenance, they may no longer be safe to use. The aim of the Renewal Plan is to make it easier for households in Spain to change from one system to another.

How does a condensing boiler work?

This is a physical process by which energy is released when a substance passes from a gaseous to a liquid state. This change of state can occur by cooling gas or by increasing the pressure.

Traditional boilers obtain heat by burning gas or diesel oil, a much less efficient process that generates polluting emissions Condensation is a more efficient and cleaner alternative process. This is why administrations are in favour of replacing old boilers.

What financial aid does the Renewal Plan provide?

Each Autonomous Community has its own Renewal Plan for homeowners with traditional boilers who are registered in their administrative territory. You will need to consult the corresponding Autonomous Community's official publications to find out about registration periods, terms and conditions and financial aid for the 2022 Renewal Plan.

Some autonomous communities have not yet published the aid for 2022. Here is a list of those where the plan has been activated:

2022 Renewal Plan in Asturias

The Ministry of Industry, Employment and Economic Promotion in the Principality of Asturias provides aid of up to €450, depending on the characteristics of the equipment that needs to be changed. Boilers need to be 12 years old. To obtain the aid it needs to be processed through the installer of the boiler.

2022 Renewal Plan in Castile-León

The Ministry of Industry, Trade and Employment in Castile-León provides individual aid of up to €500, depending on the boiler to be replaced. Those with equipment that is more than ten years old are eligible and should process their applications through an authorised installer, who will be responsible for processing the aid with the Community.

2022 Renewal Plan in the Community of Madrid

The Ministry of the Environment, Housing and Agriculture in the Community of Madrid provides aid of up to €350 per home, applicable to 25% of eligible cost (VAT not included). The deadline for applications is 21 March 2023. Applications should be submitted through the installation companies registered with the plan.

There are other possibilities for aid for energy efficiency provided by Autonomous Communities but they are not part of the 2022 Renewal Plan. We recommend that you consult the aid available in your Autonomous Community.

What are the requirements to participate in the Renewal Plan?

Generally speaking, this is the documentation you will be asked to present, although you will need to consult the exact terms and conditions.

• Application form filled in.
• Personal ID or Tax ID of the applicant.
• Bank account into which the aid is to be paid.
• Invoice and proof of payment for the purchase and installation of the new boiler.
• Certificate issued by the installation company.
• Certificate of disablement of the boiler that has been removed, provided by the installer.
• Certificate from the waste manager guaranteeing the delivery of the old boiler as waste.

Who can exchange a gas or diesel oil boiler for a condensing boiler?

If you are going to replace your old boiler with a condensing boiler through the 2022 Renewal Plan, you should contact an installer authorised by the corresponding Autonomous Community. These authorised companies have a certificate that is renewed each time an official call is made and it accredits them as authorised installers.

If you are not going to change your boiler via the 2002 Renewal Plan, any specialist, authorised company in the sector can do it.
