Our transformation
Since its founding in 1944, Endesa has been a catalyst in Spain’s development, powering up the electrification that transformed millions of lives.
For over decades, our history was linked to coal and other essential energy sources, like hydro, that have fostered cohesion and growth in Spain.
Today, we look to the future with a firm commitment to zero-emission generation sources, building a smart and resilient electrical grid that supports the electrification of our economy and providing quality and competitive electrical energy to our customers.
Our greatest challenge is to be the first Net Zero company by 2040—ten years ahead of the global commitments set at the Paris Agreement.
80 years gave us a lot to reflect on. Therefore, we've listed our greatest milestones to showcase our journey.
The challenge of electrifying a nation
Endesa was founded with a clear mission: to bring electricity to Spain which was rebuilding after the Civil War. From our first powe plants to creating a vast transmission grid, we led the electrification process, while marking a turning point in driving modernisation nationwide.
This challenge not only transformed our infrastructure but also promoted profound socioeconomic development.

A European innovation leader
Through the years, Endesa has become one of Europe’s leading energy companies. In the ‘80s and ‘90s, our international expansion and embrace of innovative technology put us at the forefront of efficiency.
Today, integrated into the Enel Group, we remain an industry leader, propelling technology breakthroughs that reshape the electric sector.
