Endesa has given the elements that were once used at the Litoral thermal power plant, which is currently in the process of being dismantled, a second life by relocating 156 of them to its Sur hydroelectric production unit (UPH Sur). By reusing these materials, the electricity company has ratified its commitment to the principles of the circular economy, providing these components with a new useful life to minimise the generation of waste.
Among the 156 components transferred from the Litoral thermal power plant are circuit breakers, oil filters or bilge pumps, like the one installed at the Doña Aldonza plant. In terms of health and safety, elements such as autonomous breathing equipment that comply with the regulations and requirements for its use have been transferred.
Since this plant went offline at the end of last year, Endesa has been dismantling the facilities of this emblematic infrastructure, which has been operating for nearly 40 years. These works are being performed by local company Caldererías Indálicas through the UTE Lecalde joint venture, ensuring the compatibility of these tasks with the maximisation of the value of all existing equipment, materials and resources.
With this in mind, a second life is to be given to components from the plant in the form of donations to institutions, non-profit organisations and educational centres, like the one recently made to the University of Almería which will significantly improve the quality of the education received by students.
With a view to continue working on the application of circular economy principles, the electricity firm plans to donate more components from the plant to associations and institutions in the local area, taking another step in achieving the SDGs and making progress with its goal of sharing value with the local community, generating a social benefit.
