Dismantling the plant
The As Pontes generation complex is located in the north of the province of A Coruña, in the municipality of As Pontes de García Rodríguez.
The dismantling of the plant began in 2025 and is estimated to conclude in 2029. In this process, priority has been given to hiring local workers, who so far account for 54% of the dismantling workforce. As part of this, a training plan has been implemented to prepare nearly 100 people to participate in these tasks, with priority given to local employment and the plant's own workers.
Energy Transition Plan
We are accompanying the closure of the As Pontes plant with a social and economic development plan for the region, which was shared with the Ministry for the Ecological Transition, as well as the Xunta de Galicia and the As Pontes City Council. With this plan, we want to show our commitment to a just energy transition process and the creation of value in As Pontes and its surroundings.
In addition to promoting the replacement of coal generation with 490 MW of renewables, this plan includes other actions:
1. Processing the permits for new renewable projects to convert the plant's capacity into new clean power.
2. New industrial developments on the land linked to the power plant. Among them, the construction by Ence of a bioplant for the recovery, development, and production of recycled natural fibres from recovered paper and cardboard. The development of this initiative will be located on the grounds of the former coal yard and will enable the creation of 234 direct jobs.
Another project, which is already in the construction phase on the plant's grounds, is EUMESER, the new industrial services division of the company EUMECONS (a local company linked to the activity of the coal-fired thermal power plant). Construction work on its industrial warehouse project, which will house the machinery and personnel necessary to provide construction assembly services and construction machinery rental, is expected to be completed in the first quarter of 2026. The launch of this initiative will enable the creation of 9 direct jobs.
In addition, work continues on the implementation of other industrial projects at the site.
3. Training plans prioritising local workers, subcontractors' employees, and female workers, provided they meet the required conditions. To date, 4 courses have been delivered.
4. New logistical role for the Ferrol outer port terminal.
5. Creation of a strategic wind maintenance logistics centre for Spain in As Pontes.
