Discover electric mobility: the future of sustainable transport
Electric mobility is transforming the way we move, offering a cleaner and more efficient alternative to traditional internal combustion vehicles. But what exactly is electric mobility, and how can it benefit you? Here’s everything you need to know.
What is electric mobility?
This type of sustainable mobility is based on using vehicles powered by electricity instead of traditional fuels like gasoline or diesel. These electric vehicles – including cars, motorcycles, bicycles, and buses – are equipped with rechargeable batteries that store energy to power their motors. This technological advancement not only reduces our reliance on fossil fuels but also significantly contributes to environmental protection.
Electric mobility in cities
In urban environments, electric mobility is transforming the way we get around. Nowadays, there’s a wide range of electric vehicles available that don’t require traditional fuels.
Electric bikes and scooters are ideal options for short trips, as they provide a fast, cost-effective, and environmentally friendly alternative. On the other hand, electric cars are gaining popularity thanks to their ability to reduce harmful emissions and improve air quality in cities, where pollution remains a critical issue. Similarly, electric buses offer a quiet, emissions-free solution for the daily commutes of thousands of public transport users.
The expansion of charging infrastructure in urban areas is making it even easier to adopt these vehicles, turning electric mobility into a practical and accessible option for everyone.
Electric mobility for long distances
While electric vehicles were initially geared more toward city travel – due to their shorter range and greater access to charging stations – advances in battery technology have now made them a viable option for long-distance journeys as well. Today, many electric cars can travel over 400 kilometres on a single charge, and the network of fast-charging stations is rapidly growing along highways and major roads to better serve long-distance travellers.
Additionally, electric trains and long-distance buses are playing a key role in the shift toward more sustainable transport. These modes of transport are not only efficient, but also help reduce the carbon footprint of intercity and international travel
Advantages of electric mobility
So far, we’ve discussed numerous benefits – but there are still more:
- Reduction of harmful emissions
Since they don’t release polluting gases, electric vehicles help fight climate change and improve air quality.
- A more cost-effective alternative
Electric vehicles have significantly lower maintenance and energy costs compared to traditional vehicles.
- Quiet and comfort
Electric motors are much quieter, enhancing the driving experience and reducing noise pollution.
- Incentives and benefits
In many countries, EV owners enjoy government incentives, tax breaks, and perks like free parking.
- Technological innovation
The rapid advances in battery technology and charging systems are making electric mobility increasingly efficient and accessible.
Therefore, electric mobility is not only a solution to today’s transport challenges, but also an investment in a cleaner, more eco-friendly future – both in cities and for long-distance travel.
MOVES III Plan: an incentive for electric and sustainable mobility
The MOVES III Plan, launched in 2021 by the Ministry for Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge (MITECO), aims to accelerate the adoption of electric mobility in Spanish households by offering incentives for purchasing electric vehicles and installing charging points.
The programme has recently been extended until 31 December 2025, effective retroactively from 1 January 2025, to ensure that no one misses out on these benefits.
The initial funding of €400 million has grown over time, reaching a total of €2.735 billion, highlighting its positive impact on the electrification of transport.
For those looking to install a charging point at home or in their business, the plan offers subsidies of up to 70% of the cost for individuals and self-employed professionals, and up to 80% for municipalities with fewer than 5,000 inhabitants, where charging infrastructure is still limited. The incentive covers both the cost of the equipment and the installation, significantly reducing the upfront expense and making access to electric mobility more attainable.
In addition, beneficiaries can take advantage of a 15% personal income tax deduction (IRPF) for the purchase of electric vehicles or charging infrastructure, offering additional savings on their investment.
This plan is a key step toward more sustainable mobility, helping individuals, self-employed professionals, and small towns embrace electrification with fewer financial barriers and greater accessibility.
