  • Award was created by the Community of Madrid in 2015 to promote energy efficiency and environmental improvements in buildings, in terms of their impact on both outdoor and indoor environments.
  • These were the first corporate headquarters in Spain to receive the triple certificate in Energy Efficiency (UNE-EN 16.001), Environmental Management (ISO 14.001) and Indoor Air Quality (UNE 171330-3), some five years ago.
  • The building was designed by the architecture firm KPF, in collaboration with the architect Rafael de la Hoz. Thanks to ongoing improvements, CO2 emissions have been reduced by 46% over the last ten years; electricity consumption by more than 20%; gas consumption by 35% and water consumption by 28%. Waste generation has dropped by 15% and the company’s recycling levels have increased by 75%.

Endesa began the 21st century by laying the first stone of its new corporate headquarters and right from the outset the building was designed for energy saving and future sustainability. Today the Community of Madrid has chosen to recognise this spirit of continuous improvement since the headquarters were inaugurated in Madrid in 2003, by awarding the building the "Sustainable Building" award. The “Sustainable Building” awards were created by the Community of Madrid in 2015 with the aim of promoting energy efficiency and environmental improvements in buildings, in terms of their impact on both outdoor and indoor environments.

José Luis Puche Castillejo, General Resources Manager at Endesa stated: “Our achievements with this building are an extension of what we do with the electricity business. The buildings and offices in which we work have to form part of our company's commitment to sustainability. They are also an extension of our employees' homes and therefore we have to ensure that the environment in which they work meets their requirements”.

Since its inauguration thirteen years ago, Endesa has been firmly committed to achieving sustainable management and the efficient use of the building, while seeking to improve the maintenance, conservation, use and management thereof. Conditions taken into account included climatic, topographic and sunlight conditions to achieve high energy efficiency, which has been recognised with various bioclimatic architecture awards, particularly for the innovative air conditioning system and its double-skin glass façade that acts as thermal, acoustic and solar insulation.

In fact, it was the first building in Spain to obtain the triple certificate for Energy Management, Environmental Management and Indoor Air Quality in 2011. This was extremely significant because the building – located in Calle Ribera del Loira, Madrid – accounts for 40% of the energy consumption and 50% of the water consumption of the 22 certified buildings that Endesa has in Spain.

The building was designed and developed by a multidisciplinary team, headed by the architecture firm KPF in London and Rafael de la Hoz in Madrid. It occupies a plot of 34,200 m2 with a total build size of 90,348 m2. One of the team’s main objectives was to achieve high energy efficiency and a high level of sustainability, and these criteria were very much taken into account during the overall design with the construction of two parallel blocks of offices located around a central covered atrium that acts as the building's lungs.

The building, in which an average 2,500 people work each day and with spaces for 1,000 cars, has managed to reduce its CO2 emissions by 46% over the last ten years; plus 20% of its electricity consumption; 35% of its gas consumption and 28% of its water consumption. Its waste generation has dropped by 15% and it has increased its level of recycling by 75%.

The commitment to sustainable management and the efficient use of the building means that work has to continue in order to improve all the areas that form part of the management of the building (spaces, services and energy) while also addressing all the other aspects that concern the company and society. Accordingly, the following initiatives have been implemented in five key areas:

Innovation:

  • Open power space
  • Business center
  • Flexible work areas

Responsibility to employees:

  • New spaces (changing room, terrace, etc.)
  • New services (dealing with personal affairs, financial advice, etc.)
  • Greater comfort and security

Social responsibility:

  • Employment of disabled people to provide support services
  • Opening the building to the exterior
  • Installation of an industrial museum

Energy efficiency and sustainability:

  • Yearly renewal of the triple certification in environmental management, energy management and indoor air quality
  • Obtaining new certificates and awards
  • Implementation of a modern consumption monitoring system
  • Campaigns to reduce consumption and waste management
  • Installation of parking for electric cars
  • Provision of new recycling points

Efficient use of space:

  • Relocation of the Endesa Foundation to the corporate headquarters
  • Installation of a new suite of rooms in the previous senior management area
  • Leasing of space to contractors
