Endesa’s renewable energy branch, Enel Green Power España, has been awarded a total of 540 MW of power for the installation of new renewable energy production facilities of wind power. This new capacity was assigned after the tender for 2,000 MW of renewable energy (extendable to 3,000 MW) launched by the Spanish Government to reach the target of covering 20% of the country's energy consumption with renewable energies by 2020. This new award means increasing the installed capacity of Enel Green Power España to 2.215 MW (2.158 MW of wind power).
Endesa´s CEO, José Bogas, stated that he was pleased with the results of this new auction, "which positions Enel Green Power España as one of the main renewable energy operators within the Spanish market. This award is an important step within Endesa's 2050 decarbonisation process, enabling a secure transition towards the new emission-free energy model”.
The award represents an investment of approximately 600 million euros over the coming years for the construction of the wind capacity. Only with this investment, Endesa fulfills its commitments announced to the market for renewables until 2019. The projects, which are expected to be operating by 2019, will sell their energy in the Spanish market and have been given incentives by the Government in terms of annual payments per capacity in order to guarantee constant returns over the plants’ 25 years of service life.
The wind projects will be located in the regions of Aragon, Andalusia, Castilla y Leon and Galicia, Autonomous Communities that already have wind resources installed. Once they are operating, the wind installations will generate approximately 1.750 GWh per year and prevent the emission of around 1.050.000 tonnes of CO2 into the atmosphere.
Enel Green Power España, Endesa’s renewable energy branch in Spain, manages an installed capacity of around 1.675 MW Spain, of which, 1.618 MW are from wind power, 43 MW from hydroelectric power and 14 MW from other renewable energy sources such as biomass and solar power. EGPE’s plants generate around 4 TWh of green energy each year.
