Innovation is one of the pillars for addressing the challenges of the future of energy. At Endesa we are investing resources and developing research projects and initiatives with the aim of improving the processes related with the distribution network.

There are four action areas with the following projects:

The digitalisation of activities related with distribution networks is a key factor in making the company’s processes more efficient.

NDT - Network Digital Twin

Highly computerised digital replication of physical assets and their management, development and maintenance processes. Constantly updated grid data is added to this replica, in real time. Information is transmitted via IoT data networks from the physical assets so it is possible to simulate and study future behaviours and improve the grid's resilience with no impact on the customers.

Their aim is to enable grids to offer an effective response to their users’ needs.

Aerial-Core Project

Development of an integrated aerial cognitive robotic system (a drone) that will have capabilities in the range of operation, handling of grid elements with a robotic arm and safety in interaction with people.

Smart5Grid project

The aim is to establish a safe area in volumetric terms, so that field technicians will be monitored by a real-time tracking system that will use a private 5G network. The project uses alarm signals to warn and make sure that no operators are near energised elements of the substation.

Resisto Project

The aim of the Resisto project is to minimise the impact of weather and other risks by increasing the resilience of the power grid through the use of sensors, prevention algorithms and autonomous drones in the Doñana national park.

RE2GRID project

Inspection of substations using autonomous drones with BVOLS flight and advanced monitoring and action on high-power transformers in order to contribute to improving the resilience of the power grid and minimise the impact of potential meteorological phenomena.

LEO Satellite project

Connectivity through low earth-orbit satellites to enable network automation and remote control in remote areas, thus providing global coverage where mobile phone or fibre optic networks are not available.

In addition to these innovation projects, in 2022, e-distribución developed a number of technological proofs of concept with start-ups and technology centres aimed at facilitating the incorporation of new technologies and new concepts into the distribution network.

  • "Delimitation of Areas in Transformation Centres": A high-precision monitoring system to help prevent access to risk areas within enclosed spaces, such as transformation centres (medium voltage/low voltage).
  • "Advanced Monitoring of High Voltage Lines" in forest environments, and high and medium voltage networks, the "Living Lab" in Garraf (province of Barcelona) begins to be the scenario for tests of different sensor technologies, for the calculation of the maximum deflection of the line and its structural integrity.
  • “Reset”: Development of a low-voltage four-branch Statcom converter. The aim is to reduce neutral currents and minimise technical losses from the grid.
  • "App Waste Crowdsourcing”: Development of a digital tool (mobile application and backend website platform) for recording and reporting both waste and incidents with birdlife found in the vicinity of aerial networks in rural and forest areas to enable their subsequent management. 

Flexibility projects

Projects like Smartnet and Coordinet aim to investigate and demonstrate the possibilities of network flexibility and its advantages.

Creation of a European energy platform and opening the market to consumers, taking advantage of the flexibility that small generators and demand can offer the system to improve grid stability. The project was completed in 2022. The Spanish pilot scheme was developed in the following locations: Cádiz, Málaga, Murcia, Alicante and Albacete, where different mechanisms were tested to study how the introduction of underutilised resources into the market may generate value for their owners and for the system as a whole.

This project was inaugurated on the island of Minorca in 2022 and aims to test new services for the distribution company making use of the mass implementation of electric mobility and to provide flexibility services through a number of electric vehicle charging stations connected to the distribution networks on the island of Minorca.

BeFlexible

It will promote flexible services that provide benefits to all those involved in the energy market by responding to all manner of consumer needs. For the e-distribución use-case demonstrator, a study will be made of the flexibility services from electric heaters installed in homes in the city of Zaragoza. The project started in 2022, and the different use cases will be studied.
