Decarbonisation

We are promoting the transition to an emissions-free energy model

We are bringing forward our conversion to a completely decarbonised company to 2040 by developing renewable energy and a commitment to the electrification of energy consumption.

Aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals

SDG 13: Climate action
SDG 7: Affordable clean energy

We are aware of the challenge our planet faces in curbing global warming. We are therefore committed to a sustainable business model that integrates the fight against climate change as a priority to create long-term value.

We are immersed in the transition to an emission-free energy model. We promote the decarbonization of energy generation systems and, at the same time, we contribute to the decarbonization of other sectors through the electrification of energy demand.

To this end, we have our 2024-2026 Strategic Plan, which contemplates an investment of 8.9 billion with which we reinforce our commitment to decarbonization with an increase in investments in renewable energies and digitalization of the grid, as well as in the electrification of residential demand and sectors such as industry and transportation.

In 2026, our renewable energy park will reach 13,600 MW of power. With this, 91% of the peninsular generating park will be free of CO₂ emissions by the end of 2025.

Full decarbonisation by 2040

We are bringing forward to 2040 our conversion to becoming a completely decarbonised company and we will be "NET Zero" by 2040. Maintaining the objective of achieving zero emissions, the use of neutralisation instruments would possibly be considered for those emissions for which there is no emission-free technological solution. In order to become a 100% renewable electricity company without links to production technologies or fuels with emissions, we will work on four main axes:

  • The deployment of new renewable capacity that will make all generation activity 100% emission-free by 2040.
Reduction of GHG emissions from the generation business.

Electrification of energy consumption

This key milestone will be accompanied by a firm commitment to the electrification of consumption.

Investments in the electricity distribution network and its digitalisation will enable us to promote the decarbonisation of the energy consumed by families, companies and public administrations through Endesa X.

We will also develop electric mobility with investments in the deployment of charging points for electric cars, which will be multiplied by four, with more than 66,000 installed by the end of 2025.

A fair energy transition

As we work to promote the change in the energy model, we are committed to contributing to ensure that the transition to an emission-free economy is fair, and we are working to mitigate the economic, environmental and social consequences that these changes may have. That is the objective of the Futur-e plans that we are promoting in the vicinities of the thermal power plants that are in the closing-down phase.

We are participating in the CDP Climate Change

Since 2006, we have been participating in the CDP Climate Change initiative, the most prestigious climate change index, which provides global information on the management of the risks and opportunities identified by the largest companies worldwide.

In the latest edition corresponding to the 2022, we renewed our Leadership rating for the sixth consecutive year. This excellent result is a reflection of Endesa's strong commitment to the fight against climate change. The recognition was given on the strength of the integration of climate change into business strategy, transparency when communicating it and its relationship with the value chain with regard to climate change.

We are also adopting best practices for emissions management and have established ambitious short- and long-term emission reduction targets, assessing their progress and implementing effective reduction actions.

Carbon footprint

Carbon footprint calculation is an instrument to create a detailed inventory of the greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions generated by a company.

Endesa has been calculating and verifying its carbon footprint voluntarily since 2009. This process includes the development of a calculation methodology and its own IT tool, the implementation of a management system and the establishment of a full inventory of GHG emissions and removals. This indicator enables us to design the main climate strategies and set emission reduction targets.

We have been registering our carbon footprint since 2013, demonstrating that it is on track to reduce its emissions, according to the criteria established by the Spanish Climate Change Office.

The Ministry of Ecological Transition and Demographic Challenge has once again acknowledged the work done and the results already obtained by Endesa over the years. For the third consecutive year, we were once again granted the triple seal (Calculate, Reduce, Compensate) of the Carbon Footprint Registry awarded by the Spanish Office for Climate Change to those organisations committed to the calculation, reduction and compensation of their emissions, making us the only company in the energy sector to have been awarded the carbon footprint registry triple seal for the fifth consecutive year.
