Heating and air conditioning
If you are going to have natural gas registered in a home or make a change in an installation, such as the boiler, you will be asked for the Gas Installation Certificate (CIG). It is the proof that the facilities are safe. Here we explain when you will need it, how to obtain it and how much it costs.
As occurs with electricity, if you want to enjoy the comforts of natural gas at home, you will need a mandatory certificate that proves that the installation in the house complies with all the rules and regulations, that it has been carried out correctly and that it is in perfect condition.
"The Gas Installation Certificate (CIG) is also known colloquially in Spain as the ‘boletín de gas’."
The CIG gives you all this.
1. When is it necessary to present the CIG?
Basically, when it is necessary to prove that your facilities are safe to receive the supply and are working properly. Therefore, you will be asked for it:
- when registering natural gas in a newly built home.
- if you reactivate the supply in a home where it has been out of service for at least 2 years.
- when you make any modification to your installations or to the boiler, heaters, etc.
"It is very important that you do not confuse registration with a change of reseller, since registrations are only needed when there was no previous supply in place."
2. How is the Gas Installation Certificate obtained?
The CIG must always be issued by an authorised technician. He or she may be an employee of your natural gas distributor or of an installation company of your choice. In any case, it is essential that the technician is a gas installer authorised by means of the RITE certificate (Regulation of Thermal Installations in Buildings). He or she must show you this professional card during the inspection.
Regardless of who issues it, the distributor has to verify that the inspection has been carried out correctly by the technician.
3. What information does the CIG contain?
The Gas Installation Certificate is a complete document that specifies the characteristics of all the components of the system, including the appliances connected to the installation.
To be fully valid it must include:
- Address of the installation.
- Details of the installation company.
- Details of the authorised installer.
- Declaration that the installation is in good condition.
- Technical data, including a detailed sketch of the installation and the results of specific tests.
4. How much does the CIG cost?
The price of the Gas Installation Certificate varies depending on the particular circumstances of each home and is calculated based on two well-defined items:
- administration costs: €15.49 (VAT included). This item is always the same, it is already set by the government and received by the distributor.
- technical inspection costs: their price is not fixed, and depends both on the company that performs the inspection (this may be your distributor or an installation company of your choice), and on the characteristics of your home.
In general, the price of the gas bulletin varies between €60 and €200 depending on the installation, equipment, size, etc.
Remember that you should never directly pay the technician who is going to do the inspection. The technicians must pass the invoice to the distributor, which in turn will transfer it to your reseller.
"In all cases, the cost of the inspection is included in your invoice, along with the gas consumption."
5. And how soon will you have it?
When the inspection has a favourable result, the installer has to register the certificate with his autonomous community, so that they can authorise it. Afterwards, they will have to give copies to the installer and the distribution company. This process should not take more than 7 calendar days.
Now you have all you need to register the supply in your reseller and begin to enjoy the peace of mind of having the many advantages of Natural Gas in your home for heating, domestic water and cooking.
