Endesa operates in several European wholesale markets to optimise its activities outside Spain and Portugal. Among other targets, this gives the group the necessary power supply to meet its contracts with European customers, to optimise management of its generation portfolio by exporting power via the Spain-France interconnection and to balance out risk positions in those areas where it operates. In addition, it has developed the export of green certificates and other renewable energy products to various European countries, improving management of renewable assets.
In 2011, operations continued in the UK, where it is active in the UK market itself and through the interconnection with Ireland. This year, the United Kingdom - Holland interconnection (BritNed) went live, offering capacity via annual, quarterly and monthly auctions. The authorisation process to operate across the French - UK border also commenced, with a view to enhancing management flexibility and increasing operations.
Endesa Ireland's fuel purchases were hedged, along with the supply activity in this country.
In Portugal, the company worked with the regulatory body ERSE on the design of CHP/renewable energy auctions and participated in all the interconnection and energy auctions held in the country.
In 2011, spot prices for power in France and Germany were higher. In France, the average price was Euro 48.96/MWh (Euro 47.5/MWh in 2010) and in Germany it was Euro 51.1/MWh (Euro 44.93/MWh in 2010).
