Peru: the Chimay reservoir

Represa Tulumayo_Chimay

Improvement of the Tulumayo River habitat with flow discharge from Edegel at the foot of the Chimay plant dam. Edegel is carrying out a project on the Chimay reservoir to improve water quality and quantity, which should benefit the downstream biotic community and, as a result, its biodiversity. Studies and research are underway with specialists and the Ministry for Energy and Mining to improve the river's environment. The Chimay hydro plant is located on the Tulumayo River, 75 km upstream from the city of San Ramón in the Jauja province of the Junín department. This is a peaking hydroelectric plant with a reservoir that is regulated daily.

The objective is to study the environmental flow of the river that best maintains the area's biodiversity and the behaviour of the habitat. So far, studies have shown that the conditions of the aquatic habitat between 2002 and 2004 were seriously damaged due to the considerable decline in water flow. Immediate action recommended was to carry out a controlled release of water from the Chimay reservoir in 2005 and 2006, which led to a slight improvement. Management of the discharges from 2006 changed the environmental quality considerably by improving the conditions of the flow with water contributed constantly from the Chimay reservoir.
