CONDITIONS FOR THE NOVARE 2009 AWARDS IN RESEARCH
AND DEVELOPMENT (R&D) IN ENERGY

ONE.- CALL.

The company ENDESA, S.A. (hereinafter ENDESA), with registered office in Madrid, c/ Ribera del Loira, 60, 28042 - Madrid, and Tax ID Code: A-28023430 registered in Volume 323, Folio 1, Sheet M-6405 of the Madrid Trade Register hereby announces the “NOVARE Awards for Research and Development (R&D) in Energy”, with a total economic endowment of Euro 2,000,000. These awards consist of four prizes of Euro 500,000, research and development PROJECTS in each of the following four scientific categories of interest: “Renewable Energies and Clean Combustion”, “Energy Storage”, “Sustainable Energy Environments” and “Energy Efficiency”.

 

TWO.- PURPOSE.

The aim of the NOVARE awards is to encourage the enterprising spirit in all energy-related matters within the international scientific community, to help meet the needs of mankind in this area. ENDESA has accordingly decided to foster the development of new R&D PROJECTS with these awards, within scientific areas of interest (categories) that coincide with its Technology and Innovation strategy.

 

THREE.- PARTICIPANTS.

These awards are open to any research team in the international scientific community (hereinafter the RESEARCHER) who has developed a new idea or original concept of innovation (hereinafter the PROJECT), relating to technologies applied in any of the areas of the energy industry mentioned above, which can be exploited economically and is of clear benefit to the environment and/or society.
The RESEARCHER therefore is understood to be the work team belonging to any university, research centre, laboratory or academic and/or scientific institution that will be legally represented by a public or private, non-profit or for profit legal entity, or by a group of legal entities, whether Spanish or foreign or any others without limitation in terms of their legal nature.

 

FOUR – AMOUNT OF THE AWARDS.

LThe prizes will be for a total amount of Euro 2 billion, divided up into four prizes of Euro 500,000 for R&D PROJECTS in each of the following four scientific categories of interest:

  • Renewable Energies and Clean Combustion: Wind, solar, marine generation, geothermal, biomass, hydrogen, nuclear, reduction of emissions, oxycombustion, capture and storage of CO2, materials, etc.
  • Energy Storage: Simulation and modular Systems for various kW or MW, inertia wheels, compressed air, mini pumping, own-production, integration with present generation systems, etc.
  • Sustainable Energy Environments: Harmonic development of natural environments, mobility, plug-in electric vehicles, public and private load Management, Smartcities, Intelligence and Network control, etc.
  • Energy Efficiency: Components for energy control in buildings of residential and tertiary use, technologies for improving and optimising consumption, management of demand, energy efficiency, etc.

 

FIVE.- PROPOSAL

The necessary and sufficient information must be presented to carry out a professional assessment of the PROJECT (hereinafter the PROPOSAL) and the original idea it is intended to develop, that shall consist of a scientific proposition or technological application for the energy industry in the described categories that represents a significant advance in economic, environmental and/or social terms on solutions currently applied. Those PROPOSALS that are supported by a scientist of recognised prestige will be positively rated.
THE RESEARCHER will ensure that, within the deadlines set and by the means referred to below, ENDESA receives the PROPOSAL containing a plan that is sufficiently detailed to allow the project to be undertaken and the R&D work performed, its viability to be judged and its subsequent progress monitored.

In this respect the PROPOSAL should at least include the following documentation regarding the PROJECT:

:

  • Memorandum (PROYECTO_Memory.pdf format exclusively): This document may be freely-structured but it is recommended that at least the following information be included: Description of current state of art, explanation of the technical characteristics of the idea and its industrial or commercial applications for the energy industry, necessary planning (timescales, costs, materials, technical and human resources).
  • Curricula (PROYECTO_CV.pdf format exclusively): Of the lead RESEARCHER and of the team members in order to allowing a judgement to be made on the professional and technical competence of the persons promoting and developing the new idea. The expected dedication times and roles to be undertaken must be included for the entire team.
  • Financing (PROYECTO_Finance.pdf format exclusively): Financial projections including the budgets for the primary suppositions on which the PROJECT is based, and a breakdown of the necessary investment and the estimated salaries for the RESEARCHERS. Anticipated impact of the development of the PROJECT, including a possible Plan for the marketing and exploitation of the results, with an assessment of the scale of the potential market. A disbursement plan of the award is also needed, that will be constructed based on a list of milestones reached by the PROJECT.
  • • List of Control of Contents (exclusively on the indicated web): Briefly complete all the necessary data for analysing the PROPOSAL (not more than 256 characters), namely:
    • WHAT?
      • Name (of the PROJECT).
      • Area of Interest (which CATEGORY has been chosen).
      • Budget (total needed to develop the PROJECT).
      • Planning (total time needed to develop the PROJECT).
      • Product or Service (it is intended to obtain).
    • WHO?
      • Name of the Lead Researcher (Contact Person).
      • Owner Institution (University, R&D Centre).
      • Suppliers (Subcontractors of the R&D work).
    • FOR WHOM?
      • Customers (list any that might be interested).
      • Investors (list any that might be interested).
      • Stakeholders (list any that might be interested).
    • WHY?
      • Social and Environmental Impacts (of the possible application).
      • Industrial Property (it is expected to obtain).
      • Growth Potential (market prospection).
      • Marketing Cost (for the new product/service).
      • Annual Operating Revenues (new product/service).
    • WHERE?
      • Site (physical location of the R&D work).
      • Environment (social, cultural, economic, demographic).
      • Regulation (legislative framework applying to the PROJECT).
    • HOW?
      • Present Status (R&D status of the PROPOSAL).
      • Milestones (list the most important ones for the PROJECT).
      • Financial Structure (source and application of funds).
    • RISKS?
      • Likelihood of Scientific Failure (assessment).
      • Planning Changes (comment on possibilities).
      • Cost Changes (comment on possibilities).
      • Changes in Results (possible variations).

If any of the basic data required for the PROPOSAL are not provided or are found to be erroneous or inaccurate, the PROPOSAL will be classed as invalid and the RESEARCHER will be excluded from taking any further part in this competition.
Any RESEARCHER wishing to participate in this edition of the NOVARE awards should present all of their PROPOSAL documentation in Spanish or English.
PROPOSALS can be submitted from midnight on 1 February 2009 up to midnight on 30 April 2009, both dates included, exclusively via ENDESA’s web site: http://www.endesa.es/.

 

SIX.- COMPETITION

ENDESA will appoint a team of people (hereinafter the JURY), who will analyse the PROPOSALS at the end of the established date for their submission.
The JURY will study all the PROPOSALS and may request, at any time, additional documentation to help it complete its assessment of a PROJECT. The PROPOSALS will be analysed evaluating their overall quality in relation to their contribution towards Energy Sustainability, Technological Innovation and Social Benefit.
Once the PROPOSALS have been analysed and evaluated according to their overall quality, to the best of its knowledge and belief and by a majority of its members, the JURY will decide which projects the awards are granted to.
The judgement of this JURY will be firm and irrevocable and will be issued before 31 July 2009, with all parties being informed of the result.
The JURY may decide not to award any or all the NOVARE awards in the event that the scientific and/or technical interest of the PROPOSALS is not considered of sufficient standard, in the opinion of a majority of its members. The decision not to award the prize in any category shall not imply a new competition being opened, but an additional prize may be granted in another of the categories.
ENDESA reserves the right to cancel the launch of the NOVARE awards, if in the judgement of its Executive Committee, circumstances arise which make it recommendable to cancel or postpone this competition.

 

SEVEN – SIGNING OF A COLLABORATION AGREEMENT

Prizes will be awarded once the RESEARCHER and ENDESA sign a contract (hereinafter the COLLABORATION AGREEMENT), stating the explicit acceptance of the agreement by both parties that the prize money received will be employed to develop the PROJECT.
The prize will be paid in successive instalments, in line with the milestones reached in the PROJECT and until the sum awarded has been fully drawn down, according to the funding requirements identified for the different stages of the PROJECT plan contained in the PROPOSAL. The concession of the award does not exclude the RESEARCHER from obtaining any other subsidy or contribution compatible with the principles governing these bases.
The mere presentation of a project in these awards implies acceptance by the RESEARCHER of the assignment of industrial property Rights arising from the PROJECT to ENDESA, without prejudice to recognising the RESEARCHER’s intellectual property rights on the original idea PROPOSAL. All these aspects shall be explained in detail in a COLLABORATION AGREEMENT.
The RESEARCHER will at all times be responsible for carrying out the PROJECT which will be undertaken with the use of his own human or material resources outlined in the PROPOSAL.

 

EIGHT.- EXCLUSIONS.

ENDESA employees and their direct relatives (e.g. spouse, children, parents, brothers and sisters) are expressly excluded from this edition of the NOVARE awards.
Individuals and legal entities whose activity is not envisaged within an institution recognised for its scientific contributions to research and development tasks (e.g. individual persons or providers of goods and commercial services) are also excluded.

 

NINE.- PROJECT MONITORING.

ENDESA will monitor the development of the prize-winning PROJECTS and will be able to seek authorisation from the RESEARCHERS to visit their place of work and receive complementary demonstrations of the scientific concepts and applications for the purpose of obtaining a broader understanding of the original idea and its development, as well as of the implementation of the PROJECT plan.

 

TEN.- COMMUNICATIONS.

ENDESA’s support will be prominently publicised at any communication activities organised by the RESEARCHERS in relation to the winning PROJECT (e.g.: website, publication, press). At the same time, ENDESA reserves the right to publish its contributions to the winning PROJECT, using any communication media.

 

ELEVEN.- ACCEPTANCE.

Participation in this competition supposes the unreserved acceptance of each and every one of its conditions, without exception, and implies that the participant accepts ENDESA’S decision as regards the resolution of any matter deriving from the application of these conditions, in particular relating to the JURY’s decision.
The current conditions will be filed with a notary public and will be available for consultation by any participant.
