ENDESA operates its distribution activity through ENDESA Red.
It is Spain's leading company distributing electricity to customers at a regulated tariff with a market share of 42.8%.
The number of customers in Spain and Portugal exceeded 11.4 million, up 2.1%. Sales totalled 72,746 GWh in 2007, up 1.6% compared with 2006.
ENDESA's distribution market in Spain covers a territory of close to 200,000 km2, mainly in 20 provinces in the regions of Catalonia, Andalusia, Extremadura, Canary Islands, Balearic Islands, Aragón and Castilla y León, covering a population of about 22 million inhabitants.
ENDESA is the Spanish company which invests most in distribution. Within the framework of the 2005-2009 Strategic Plan ENDESA plans to invest Euro 3,300 million in distribution, 45% of the total investment earmarked for the Spanish market.
Investment in 2007 amounted to Euro 1,314 million. This money has been invested in improving the security and quality of supply, covering the strong growth in the market, maintaining the environment and the electrification of rural areas.
At the end of 2007 the length of its electricity transmission and distribution lines was 303,597 km, 28% of which corresponded to underground lines.
At the end of 2007 ENDESA had 947 substations and 151,673 transformation centres.
