Endesa confirms its leading position in power generation in Spain in 2011

2/21/2012  Madrid

• The company produced a total of 138,714 GWh, an increase of 6.3%, in the countries where it operates. Of this total, 74,249 GWh were generated in Spain, a 12% increase on the previous year.

• Power generation was driven by Spain, Colombia and Peru, with growth of over 7%.

• Endesa produced 46.5% of the power it generated outside Spain.

Endesa produced a total of 138,714 GWh in 2011 in the countries where it operates, a year-on-year increase of 6.3%. This increase was due to the strong performance of its production facilities, noted principally at its plants in Spain, Peru and Colombia. Endesa currently produces 46.5% of the power it generates outside Spain.

In Spain as a whole, output rose by 12% to 74,249 GWh for the year to 31 December. Endesa thus maintained its leadership position in Spain, with a 39.4% market share.

In Spain, the over-100% increase in output at coal-fired plants, to 23,080 GWh, was truly noteworthy. However, hydro and nuclear output fell by 33% and 9% to 6,179 GWh and 25,177 GWh respectively due to the lower rainfall conditions over the period and to the extending of the building work undertaken during programmed downtimes at the nuclear plants.

The increase in the availability of the company's conventional thermal output in Spain also stood out, as it rose from 92.7% in 2010 to 93.6% in 2011.

Output in Latin America rose to 62,767 GWh for the year to 31 December, a year-on-year increase of 0.6%. Growth occurred mainly in Peru and Colombia. Endesa's output grew by 7.7% in Peru, to 9,840 GWh, and by 7.2% in Colombia, to 12,090 GWh, which offset the declines in Brazil, Argentina and Chile. In Argentina, output fell by 0.2% to 15,960 GWh. Output in Chile also dropped slightly, by 0.9%, to 20,722 GWh, principally as a result of the drought affecting the country. Finally, Brazil produced 4,155 GWh, a decrease of 18.4%.

In Latin America, output from fuel-gas plants grew by 16% (5,639 GWh), while output from hydro plants remained practically unchanged (33,635 GWh). Output from coal-fired plants rose 5% (2,084 GWh) and combined cycle plants produced 21,236 GWh, around 2% down, mainly due to Brazil.

The company's generation mix remained balanced, as in previous years, with 29% of GWh output coming from hydro plants, 21% from coal-fired plants, 18% from nuclear stations, 11% from fuel-gas plants and 21% from combined cycle plants. This means that approximately half of Endesa's output was produced without emitting greenhouse gases.
